Surviving Narcissists in Leadership: Gaslighting, Victimhood, and Moral Wholeness

Have you ever sat through a meeting where one person hijacked every topic, belittled others, and twisted the truth to make themselves look blameless? Whether in conference rooms, family systems, or the highest seats of public power, narcissistic behavior follows a predictable pattern: rewriting reality, attacking anyone who dissents, and playing the perpetual victim while causing the harm. In this episode of The Optimistic Beacon, Ray examines the unmistakable traits of narcissistic personalities and explores how to protect our inner peace when surrounded by manipulative dynamics. Drawing a powerful contrast between self-serving leaders and the selfless humility of Saint Francis of Assisi, Ray offers an encouraging reminder of what truly matters: refusing to be bought off by empty promises, grounding our allegiance in higher principles, and leaning on each other rather than falling prey to those who view people merely as tools. Character at the Ballot Box: Psychological Health vs. Public Arrogance

What defines the caliber of our leaders—and the choices we make when evaluating them? In this Optimistic Minute, Dr. Ray Calabrese explores Abraham Maslow’s shift from studying human pathology to examining what makes people fundamentally good. Maslow observed that psychologically healthy individuals naturally gravitate toward truth, justice, beauty, and goodness, whereas psychological scarcity fosters hostility, defensiveness, and greed. Using Aesop’s fable of the dancing camel, Ray illustrates the absurdity that unfolds when leaders posture outside their genuine abilities, trading natural dignity for pomposity. As elections approach, this episode serves as a timely reflection on discerning authentic character, integrity, and compassion in public service before heading to the ballot box. I'd love to hear your takeaways. Send your reflections to Ray at ray.brese@gmail.com.
