Episode #43: Every Great Radio Station is Handcrafted

Send us Fan Mail The recent layoffs and station closures across our industry have reignited the conversation about radio's future.  Much of that conversation revolves around scale … the universally recognized best way to create efficiencies, lower costs, and improve margins.  There's nothing wrong with any of those things for many industries. But, for radio, they overlook one inconvenient truth.  Community relevance is not scalable.  You can copy a playlist, a format, a logo, a morning show feature.  You can't copy the bond between a station and the listeners who call that place home.  Great radio isn't manufactured. It's handcrafted by people who know which road floods every spring, which restaurant everyone loves, which families quietly need help this Christmas, which local business has spent 40 years earning the community's trust, which high school rivalry will dominate conversations all week, which charity radiothon everyone clears their calendar to support.  Those aren't programming elements. They're relationships.   And relationships aren't scalable.  The stations that become woven into the fabric of a community aren't programed from a boardroom a thousand miles away.  They're built in the community, one conversation, one live remote, one event, one local story, one advertiser success story, one shared laugh, one difficult day at a time.  When someone asks, "How do we scale radio?" they’re asking the wrong question.  The right question is: How do we protect the one thing our competitors can't scale?  Shared Local Experience.   Every great radio station is handcrafted.   And handcrafted things were never meant to be mass produced.  ---  If you found this insight useful, I post regularly about how audio shapes demand and delivers ROI — hit follow to stay in the loop.  Get THE TRUTH ABOUT RADIO on Amazon:   This post is original content. Episode #39: Radio Doesn't Watch You Back

Send us Fan Mail Every other modern medium watches you back.  Digital knows: What you clickedHow long you hoveredWhat you almost boughtWhat you searched at 2:14 a.m. Radio knows…  nothing about you!  And that’s the point.  Radio doesn’t individualize.  It doesn’t optimize mid-sentence.  It doesn’t chase you around the internet like a needy ex.  It simply speaks — confidently, consistently, to everyone at once.  That absence of a feedback loop creates something rare in media today: psychological safety.  Listeners don’t feel evaluated.  Advertisers don’t feel desperate.  Messages land without pressure.  That’s why radio endorsements still work.  That’s why repetition feels reassuring instead of creepy.  That’s why people trust voices they’ve never met.  For managers:  You’re not selling impressions. You’re protecting trust at scale.  For AEs:  You’re not “behind digital.” You’re selling the relief from it.  In a surveillance economy obsessed with data,  radio’s biggest advantage might be the one metric it doesn’t collect.  And ironically —  that’s what makes it work.  Radio doesn’t track attention. It earns trust.  ---  If you found this insight useful, I post regularly about how audio shapes demand and delivers ROI — hit follow to stay in the loop.  Get THE TRUTH ABOUT RADIO on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FG4RVTHB  📲 Listen to The Truth About Radio podcast here: https://davesturgeon.com/the-truth-about-radio/ or find it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.  This post is original content.
