    My Fair Lady - PART 1

    Well “wouldn’t it be loverly” to join us this week as we get ready to “Dance all night” and spin into this weeks review of My Fair Lady?  This film marks review # 20 of the AFI list of Greatest Movie Musicals of all time.  My Fair Lady was adapted from Lerner and Loewe's 1956 stage musical based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 stage play, Pygmalion.  With a screenplay by Alan Jay Lerner and directed by George Cukor, the film depicts a poor Cockney flower-seller named Eliza Doolittle who overhears phonetics scholar Henry Higgins casually wager that he could teach her to speak English so well she could pass for a duchess in London. The Film Stars: Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway, Wilfrid Hyde-White, Gladys Cooper, Jeremy Brett, Theodore Bikel, Mona Washbourne, and of course, it would be ridiculously unfair not to mention Marni Nixon as the singing voice behind Eliza Doolittle.    With a production budget of $17 million, My Fair Lady was the most expensive film shot in the United States up to that time.  A critical and commercial success, it became the second-highest-grossing film of 1964, funnily enough, after Mary Poppins (more on that as you listen), and was nominated for 12 academy awards, winning 8 of them!  The biggest controversy from this film comes from the Casting which we will definitely speak on throughout this review. !
