    S02E02 What's Done is Done

This episode, tl;dr: What if literally everyone blamed sex for things that are objectively unrelated -- We pick up immediately after Sexy Christian Dad's death (Rob: "RIP to the hottest guy on this show"; Sarah, "Eww") , and the Bowman house has officially entered its "everyone copes in the least healthy way possible" era. Grace has locked herself in her room, convinced that having sex somehow caused a plane crash, because this show will never miss an opportunity to crank purity culture up to eleven. Tom doesn't exactly help matters. He greets Adrian by announcing that Grace killed SCD... and Adrian helped because she made sex look "too fun and too HOT." Sir... that's not how aviation works. Meanwhile, Kathleen asks George to identify SCD's body, proving that despite their incredibly messy history, George really does show up when it matters. It's one of those rare moments where he isn't spreading gossip or making everyone's life worse. Over at the Juergens house, Amy wants to visit Grace but needs someone to watch baby John. Ben volunteers. Amy says no. Ben hears "absolutely not" and somehow translates it as, "Show up anyway." While Amy's gone, Sausage King casually proposes to Jennifer Coolige in the front seat of his car. JC says yes... but then casually mentions one tiny detail: She's still married. Across town, Skipper proposes to Anne because apparently everyone on this show processes unexpected pregnancies by immediately suggesting marriage. Anne isn't exactly swept off her feet, mostly because she's wondering whether Skipper loves her or just feels obligated because she's pregnant. At the Bowman house, Anne arrives just in time to find George rubbing Kathleen's back. To be fair, he is comforting a grieving widow. To Anne... it looks like George's timing is suspiciously convenient. Meanwhile, Amy tries to comfort Grace, who responds by declaring that baby John is basically divine punishment for Amy having sex. Nothing says "thanks for visiting" like insulting someone's newborn. Love Grace's villain era. AND FAIR ENOUGH!!! Back home, Amy discovers Ben has wandered next door looking for diapers because he left John with Leo and Betty. Yes. The newly engaged butcher and his technically-still-married fiancée are now babysitting. What could possibly go wrong? Ben then chooses this exact moment to complain that Amy isn't paying enough attention to him. She's raising a newborn. Read. The. Room. Elsewhere, Ashley asks George the question we've all been screaming at the TV: "Did you actually get a vasectomy?" George insists he did... while acting so suspicious that even the audience starts checking his medical records. Meanwhile, Ricky and Adrian sneak off for some quality time in the car before Sexy Bald Ruben interrupts them like the world's most awkward neighbourhood watch volunteer. Surprisingly, instead of threatening Ricky, Ruben actually has a mature conversation about boundaries and promises Adrian he'll get them a proper house. This may be the single healthiest conversation in the entire episode. Which is saying something. The episode ends on an especially heartbreaking note. Grace tells Jack she doesn't love him anymore and vows she'll never have sex again, convinced she's being punished for it. Jack is left sitting alone outside with a beer, wondering how his life unraveled so spectacularly in the space of 48 hours. ✨ Final score: Rob: -1 Ashley: -1 Sarah: -2

    S02E01 The Big One

"What if there was... another pregnancy?" Amy catches Anne hiding a pregnancy test like she's a teenager sneaking cigarettes, and before you know it, Anne is expecting. George immediately goes into full Law & Order: Vasectomy Unit, insisting the baby can't possibly be his because he had "the procedure." Poor Skippy has barely learned Anne's last name and suddenly he's being treated like the prime suspect on Maury. Meanwhile, Amy is discovering that newborns are less like adorable dolls and more like tiny, screaming dictators. Baby John cries constantly, Amy hasn't slept in approximately seventeen years, and Ben somehow decides this is the perfect time to complain that their relationship isn't progressing fast enough. Read the room, Be. In one of the season's most unexpected twists, Ricky keeps wandering into the house and... being useful? He cooks dinner, calms John down in seconds, and generally behaves like someone who accidentally wandered in from a completely different, much more responsible TV show. Ashley, meanwhile, continues to be the show's greatest detective. Leo introduces his glamorous new girlfriend, and Ashley takes one look before basically saying, "Isn't that the escort Tom hired?" Ashley could solve cold cases if anyone let her. George spends the episode proving that if information exists, he will share it with the worst possible person at the worst possible moment. Skippy learns Anne is pregnant thanks to George's inability to mind his own business, immediately panics, and copes by drinking enough to make every decision dramatically worse. Over on Team Teen Drama, Grace is convinced she's making a mature adult decision, Adrian is convinced she's making a terrible mistake, and Ricky somehow finds himself giving one of the episode's most emotionally honest speeches—this time ripping into Ruben for abandoning Adrian years ago. It's always jarring when Ricky briefly becomes the wisest person in the room. Ben and Ricky continue their eternal rivalry, except now it's less "Who gets Amy?" and more "Who can financially support a baby?" It's basically The Apprentice: Teen Dad Edition. Just when you think the episode is wrapping up with the usual mix of jealousy, awkward family dinners, and George Juergens creating fresh chaos... ...the show drops an absolute bomb. Sexy Christain Dad... Rob's favorite smug, hairy chested, BABE of the CENTURY who I would convert to any religion for ... DIES in a plane crash. This is a dark, dark day in for this podcast. Please hold Rob in your thoughts.

S01E023 And Unto Us, A Child Is Born

WE MADE IT!!! It's the last episode of Season 1!! We did it! Woo woo! After an entire season of speeches about abstinence, pregnancy, adoption, putting the baby in Mimsie's drawer, love triangles, fake marriages, fake IDs, and approximately 14 million conversations in the school hallway, the moment finally arrives: Amy goes into labor. Suddenly every single person she's ever spoken to appears at the hospital, because apparently Grant Memorial Hospital has no visitor limits and absolutely no privacy policy. Thank you for the sweet Best Western Conference Centre Labour and Delivery Suite, a la Sausage King. Ben and Ricky, having spent the season competing over Amy like she's the last Xbox on Black Friday, decide to call a temporary truce. They agree to be civil for the baby's sake. Meanwhile, Adrian arrives to support Ricky, only for Grace to casually announce she's getting back together with Jack. Ricky's love life officially flatlines. Dun dun dunnnn After what feels like three feature films' worth of labor, Amy finally gives birth to a healthy baby boy: John. Everyone takes turns holding the baby and immediately starts acting like parenthood is beautiful, magical, and completely manageable. Cut to approximately five minutes later... Amy gets home and discovers that newborns don't care if you're the main character. She's exhausted. She's overwhelmed. Meanwhile, Ricky visits John and, in one of the biggest surprises of the season, realizes he actually likes being a dad. Time for Good Guy Eyes in overdrive. And just when you think the drama is winding down, George and Ashley reveal they've moved out, leaving Anne standing in the family home wondering how her entire life changed in the space of one pregnancy. Sigh, and in all honesty, I am SAVORING this season because, in early Season 2, someone will die... DUN DUN DUN. Rob will be seen in a room crying. Hopefully that will entice you to keep listening and keep watching Secret Life.

    S01E020 Maybe Baby

Sorry for delay!! I was on vacation and should have brought my laptop with me!! Anne heads to another interview—this time with David (but since he was in SATC, his name is now SKIPPER), the architect from the hot dog stand who clearly wants to date her. George, threatened by the horrifying concept of his ex-wife moving on, launches a campaign of pure misinformation, telling Anne that David is gay, hard of hearing, and somehow injured during a figure skating accident. Because Anne apparently left all critical thinking the store where she bought that fab airline attendant outfit, she walks into the interview screaming about her personal life and aggressively proving what an ally she is to the gay community. David: 👁️👄👁️ (me too, diva) Shockingly, despite what can only be described as a professional hostage situation, David still thinks Anne has good ideas. Standards are low in this town. Meanwhile, Leo (aka the Sausage King) decides Ben desperately needs a personality transplant via manual labor and ships him off to work at the butcher shop. Ben protests because rich-boy suffering is hard. But wait! Leo also offers Ricky a job, and Ricky immediately sees this for what it is: an opportunity to finally stop being emotionally manipulative and become financially manipulative. Now that Ricky has money and a steady job, Ben’s favorite argument—“I can provide for Amy better than you”—suddenly collapses faster than Amy’s original adoption plan. At school, Amy is having one of her patented sad hallway walks because George forgot to pick her up. (He was too busy secretly shopping for a post-divorce bachelor house.) Lauren and Madison offer a ride if she agrees to mall time, Adrian and Grace offer emotional support, but Amy chooses the classic teen pregnancy coping strategy: wandering around alone looking tragic. Eventually she ends up in a baby store, where a sweet employee gifts her tiny overalls, triggering a full existential crisis because she’s supposedly still giving the baby up. This show really said: What if hormones but devastating? Back at the butcher shop: Ricky? Good guy™ eyes in overdriveBen? Being absolutely humbled by Bunny (MIMI from the Drew Cary Show), the terrifying manager who sees through rich-boy nonsense immediately. For the first time ever, Ben realizes Ricky may actually have a competitive edge and unfortunately, that edge is work ethic. Meanwhile, Jack confronts little criminal mastermind Duncan about the fake mugging and stolen truck situation. Duncan’s tiny-man intimidation tactics continue, but Jack somehow still insists on mentoring him while dating his sister. Choices! At home, Amy catches George and Ashley watching her emotional video for the baby while Ashley mocks it like a Gen Z reaction channel. Amy understandably loses it, because maybe don’t roast your pregnant sister’s goodbye tape?? Over in Adult Romance Land™, Anne gives David another shot after realizing George completely lied about literally everything. David confirms: Not gay ❌Not deaf ❌Very interested in Anne ✅He kisses her mid-interview (HR violation king), offers her a job, and asks her to dinner. Anne Juergens hive: we are so back. But the emotional centerpiece of the episode is Amy finally starting to believe she might actually keep the baby. And suddenly—miracle of miracles—everyone becomes useful: Grace & Jack secure daycare through the churchRicky & Ben both get jobs to support the babyAdrian offers her condo for the baby shower (growth?)Her friends rally around her like an ABC Family finale montageEven Anne eventually comes around, and for the first time in forever, Amy starts to imagine a future where she keeps the baby.

S01E019 Money For Nothing, Chicks For Free

Move over Dire Straits and the title/song reference: it's time to really party.... with Secret Life! Woo ya. At the Juergens house, it’s business as usual: Anne is serving divorced woman in a power blazer, George is pretending the divorce is just a fun misunderstanding, Amy is passionately unemployed (she has a sausage empire as a dowry), and Ashley has once again vanished without anyone sounding the alarm. Turns out Ashley’s off hanging with mysterious new boy Thomas, who drops two bombshells: he’s homeschooled, and he’s 13 years old. It's giving Simon from 7th Heaven. Meanwhile, Anne secures jobs for both herself and Amy at the Hot Dog Hut, proving once again that if you want something done, Anne will reluctantly do it herself while everyone around her spirals. Over in Purity Culture Central™, Grace decides Adrian should become a born-again virgin, because apparently virginity now operates like a software reset. First: a pink cardigan makeover. Then: a field trip to Reverend Stone, who gently suggests Adrian should maybe ask God for forgiveness if she’s serious about reclaiming her ✨virtue✨. Adrian absolutely entertains this idea—not for spiritual reasons, but because she’s trying to seduce her stepbrother Max through emotional wholesomeness? This show really said boundaries are optional. Meanwhile, Ben finally figures out the one thing Ricky fears more than feelings: financial responsibility. Ben is a total Chad for like 0.2 seconds. Hooray! At Adrian’s house, Ricky attempts one last seduction, only to be thwarted by Max arriving with a literal teddy bear and healthy emotional communication. And then… a shocking development: Someone flirts with Anne Juergens. An architect named David [Skipper!! From SATC!!!] gives Anne a job lead and his phone number, and suddenly she’s glowing in a way George absolutely cannot handle. After a full episode of denial, George realizes—oh no—Anne might actually move on.
