Why You Shouldn't Ignore Asian Flush | Dr Kiat

Your red face after one drink is not embarrassing. It's your body sounding a biological alarm.   Key Takeaways: - Asian flush is caused by a genetic ALDH2 enzyme deficiency - not alcohol sensitivity - Without this enzyme, acetaldehyde (a known carcinogen) accumulates rapidly in the body - Symptoms include facial redness, racing heart, and nausea after even small amounts of alcohol - The flush is a warning signal - not a cosmetic inconvenience   I'm Dr. Kiat, let's keep going heart to heart.   Disclaimer The information provided on this channel is for general educational purposes only. Most people are drinking protein without a strategy. Dr Kiat breaks down the four rules that actually matter - and shares two recipes he uses himself.   Key takeaways: - 20–30 grams per serve is sufficient for most adults - Strategic timing outperforms continuous sipping - Always check labels for added sugars, sweeteners, and fillers - Match protein type to your individual gut tolerance - Collagen coffee is a simple, low-digestion morning option - A post-workout blend with real food outperforms processed protein drinks   🕐 Chapter 0:00 Are you drinking protein smart? 0:46 Rule 1 - Dose matters 0:56 Rule 2 - Timing matters 1:05 Rule 3 - Read the label 1:18 Rule 4 - Match protein to your gut 1:56 Smart option 1 - Morning collagen coffee 2:11 Smart option 2 - Post-workout recipe 3:03 Key takeaway   I'm Dr Kiat - let's keep going heart to heart.   Disclaimer The information provided on this channel is for general educational purposes only. ✅ How to Choose a Safe Supplement: A Cardiologist's Evidence-Based Checklist | Dr Kiat

A major supplement scandal has just gone viral in China, attracting over 130 million views on Weibo - and my inbox has been flooded with the same question ever since: are Australian supplements still safe to take?   The story centres on a top-selling supplement brand marketed as a premium Australian import, exposed by state broadcaster CCTV as having no legitimate Australian manufacturing presence. Investigators traced its registered Melbourne address to an unrelated auto repair shop. The brand also allegedly lacked required government health approvals, and had purchased international awards to manufacture credibility. A joint investigation by multiple Chinese regulatory bodies has since been launched.   My take: this is not a story about Australian supplements being unsafe - it is a story about fraudulent marketing. And it makes one thing clear: you need to know how to verify what you are buying.   How I choose a trustworthy supplement: 1. Verify the TGA listing (AUST L number) on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) - this is the minimum safety baseline 2. Prioritise products with third-party testing and genuine consumer reviews of that specific product, not just the brand 3. Trust the label, not the marketing - claims that only appear on an e-commerce page and not on the physical label are a red flag 4. Follow the recommended dose on the label - most supplement problems stem from incorrect dosing, not the ingredient itself 5. "Australian owned" does not mean made in Australia - confirm the product is actually sold and available to purchase domestically   Have a supplement you're unsure about? Leave it in the comments - I'll review it.   I'm Dr Kiat - medical scientist and cardiologist. The Truth About Fresh vs Frozen Acaí | Dr Kiat

"Fresh is best" - one of the biggest myths in nutrition. Dr Kiat explains why this tiny berry flips the rule on its head.   Acaí berries grow in the Amazon and are loaded with anthocyanins - the same purple compounds found in blueberries and red wine. But acaí spoils within 24 hours of harvest. Unless you're eating it in the Amazon, your so-called "fresh" acaí has already lost much of its antioxidant power.   So what actually works? Dr Kiat breaks down the food science behind flash-freezing, and why this principle extends far beyond acaí - to berries, greens, and fish.   Key takeaways: - Acaí spoils within 24 hours of harvest - "fresh" acaí outside the Amazon has already degraded - Flash-freezing locks in anthocyanins and vitamin E at peak levels - Frozen berries retain over 90% of their antioxidant content - Frozen greens preserve folate and carotenoids effectively - Frozen fish protects omega-3 fats better than fresh fish on extended display - Processing methods like freezing, fermenting, and gentle drying protect nutrients - air, heat, and light destroy them - The goal is keeping food biologically alive by the time it reaches your plate - Choose frozen, unsweetened acaí blended with real ingredients, not fruit juice   Chapters: 0:00 The "Fresh Is Best" Myth 0:27 Why Acaí Spoils Within 24 Hours 0:54 Why Flash-Freezing Locks In Nutrients 1:31 How to Choose Acaí Wisely 1:48 Acaí's Role in Heart Health Science 2:15 Why Freezing Works for Other Foods Too 2:47 When Processing Protects Nutrients 3:15 The Smarter Way to Eat Acaí   Disclaimer The information provided on this channel is for general educational purposes only. Is Coffee Good for Your Heart? What the Science Actually Shows | Dr Kiat

Most people reach for coffee every morning without a second thought - but the science behind what it does to the heart deserves a closer look.   Drawing on the UK Biobank - a landmark study tracking nearly half a million adults over 12 years - Dr Kiat breaks down what the evidence actually shows about moderate coffee consumption, cardiovascular risk, and heart rhythm health. The findings may surprise you.   Key takeaways: Research associates 2–3 cups of coffee daily with up to 20% lower risk of cardiovascular mortality, based on a study of ~500,000 adults over 12+ years - Studies suggest 2–3 cups daily may be associated with 10–15% lower likelihood of developing irregular heartbeats such as atrial fibrillation - Coffee's polyphenols - including chlorogenic acid - are linked in research to reduced inflammation and improved blood vessel flexibility - Both regular and decaffeinated coffee are associated with similar longevity and heart health outcomes; caffeine may offer added heart rhythm benefits - Paper-filtered coffee traps oils (cafestol and kahweol) that can slightly raise LDL cholesterol - a small but meaningful distinction - Avoid coffee within 8 hours of sleep - caffeine can quietly reduce deep sleep quality and increase nighttime awakenings even when no stimulant effect is felt - Those with uncontrolled blood pressure, anxiety, or known heart rhythm conditions should seek personalised medical advice before increasing coffee intake - The research-supported range is approximately 2–4 cups daily (~200–400 mg caffeine); benefits appear to plateau beyond 4 cups   ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 Coffee as Liquid Gold 0:29 Why Coffee Got a Bad Rap for Decades 1:04 What Half a Million People Over 12 Years Revealed 1:37 How Coffee Actually Protects Your Heart 2:07 How Much Coffee Is Too Much? 2:44 Does the Type of Coffee Really Matter? 3:59 Decaf vs Regular - What the Research Actually Shows 4:55 What Happens When You Drink More Than 4 Cups? 5:17 Dr Kiat's Personal Coffee Routine 5:55 Final Thoughts - Listen to Your Body   I'm Dr. Kiat. The Truth About Creatine for Women Over 40 | Dr Kiat

In a previous episode, Dr Kiat explored creatine's role in brain health and the early research around Alzheimer's. This time, the focus is specifically on women - why female biology changes the creatine story entirely, and what the science says about brain, muscle, and bone health across a woman's life.   Key Takeaways: - Women start with naturally lower creatine stores than men - less muscle mass, lower dietary intake - Falling estrogen in midlife disrupts the body's energy system, driving fatigue, brain fog, and slower recovery - Creatine may support brain energy metabolism - early research suggests links to improved focus, reduced mental fatigue, and faster processing speed - Emerging research explores possible connections to depression and Alzheimer's - findings are preliminary and ongoing - Creatine may help preserve muscle mass after 40, supporting metabolic health and glucose control - Stronger muscle supports stronger bones - potentially reducing fracture risk over time - Relevant across all life stages: perimenopause, menopause, and beyond - Who may benefit: women over 35, low meat intake, fatigue, brain fog - Evidence-based dose: 3–5g daily. No loading phase required - Always consult your doctor before starting any supplement, especially if you have existing health conditions - Always seek personalised medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional before making changes to your supplement or health regimen.   I'm Dr Kiat - medical scientist and cardiologist.
