Never A Phase 32: Cold Wrecks

Never A Phase 32: Cold Wrecks On this episode of the Never A Phase Podcast, Swemo talks to Cold Wrecks. And it’s a lot of chaos. Full disclosure, this conversation was recorded the end of July, went twohours of three tired men…very distracted…often talking over each other and pulling at every random thread they could find. BUT, at the heart of this episodecwe have a very real conversation about making music in times of transition inyour life including parenthood, mourning, a global pandemic and, y’know, plunging into fascism. It’s long. It’s messy. But it’s a great conversation. Cold Wrecks put out a new album You Can’t Plan For This back in August and will be playing with Spanish Love Songs on November 8th in NYC and appearing at the FEST in Gainesville, FL October 23rd, opening for Fenix TX at Heartwood.    The Never A Phase Podcast is a part of the Never A Phase Network. Never A Phase 29: Radkey

On Never A Phase 29, Swemo sits down with RADKEY, the Missouri-born rock band made up of three brothers who grew up homeschooled in what they affectionately describe as a “s****y little pink house,” raised on their dad’s punk and metal records and the DIY spirit that would eventually become the foundation of their career. RADKEY’s story is one of perseverance. After being signed to a label that was bought out, losing their team, watching a publishing deal disappear alongside the collapse of crypto, and being booked on tours that barely paid the bills, the band kept going. Instead of letting those setbacks define them, they took control of their own career, booking their own shows, touring on their own terms, and taking back the rights to their music. Now, RADKEY is preparing to release their upcoming album Bedroom Sand, recorded during the summer of 2025 at Syracuse University after the brothers found a way to use the university’s School of Music studio while campus was empty. The album’s lead single, “Victory,” serves as a fitting statement for a band that has spent their entire career proving that persistence, independence, and a refusal to quit can create something powerful. Never A Phase 28: Origami Angel

Kanan is back with another Never A Phase conversation, this time sitting down with Ryland and Pat of Origami Angel! The duo talks about their latest releases, including two brand-new songs with a very specific Pokémon connection, and how those tracks originally came to life as the theme songs for an epic YouTube video. From there, the conversation gets into the art of writing short songs, whether Origami Angel would ever unleash a ten-minute prog-rock monster, and how playing songs live can completely change the way a band feels about its own music. Ryland also breaks down how Origami Angel balances technical ambition with the most important rule of all: the song has to be fun. The band discusses pushing their sound without losing the groove, why sometimes a song you weren't sure about becomes a live favorite, and how watching a crowd react can give an old song an entirely new meaning. And because this is Origami Angel, there's plenty of discussion about the band's refusal to add a bassist, their love of being a two-piece, the possibility of someday having a full orchestra onstage instead, and the ridiculous amount of Easter eggs hidden throughout their music. Kanan gets the answers to some seriously important questions, including whether anyone has successfully applied to be Origami Angel's bassist and what one of the band's most obscure lyrical references actually means. Never A Phase 27: Pedro Aida | The Iron Roses & Shotclock

Cameron sits down with Pedro Aida of The Iron Roses for a conversation about DIY punk, community, and keeping the music moving on your own terms. Pedro wears a lot of hats in the punk world, from fronting ShotClock and Fire Sale to keeping The Iron Roses busy, but this conversation centers on the band’s new album Molotov Nights, a 10-song, 23-minute record that was made and released completely independently. Pedro talks about why The Iron Roses decided to go 100% DIY, what it means to have a community rally behind a band, and why independent music can still thrive without waiting around for a label to make the next move. Cameron and Pedro also dig into the connection between punk and community, including charity shows, food drives, all-ages events, and the festivals that bring musicians and fans together for something bigger than just another night of music. Plus, we get into early shows for elder emos, pre-show rituals, the importance of fresh socks, Pedro's dream of finally getting The Iron Roses booked at DC's legendary 9:30 Club, and the time he somehow ended up playing with The Ataris while they opened for Blink-182.
