Rand Fishkin on Zero-Click Marketing and AI Search: Why Traffic Isn’t the Whole Story

68% of US Google searches now end without a click, according to a recent SparkToro study. Marketers see organic traffic falling and blame AI, and budgets follow. The data tells a different story. In this episode of Get Discovered, we sit down with Rand Fishkin, co-founder and CEO of SparkToro and co-founder of Moz, whose research is among the most cited on what’s happening to search traffic. Rand explains why AI isn’t replacing Google: search is still growing, even as AI use climbs. What is happening is the death of the click, as every major platform works to keep users from leaving. He and Joe discuss why AI visibility is easy to sell and almost impossible to measure, and why traffic was always a vanity metric. Rand also shares a practical alternative: a correlation dashboard that ties channel activity to sales instead of chasing perfect attribution. In this episode: Why “AI is replacing Google” is business mythologyThe zero-click era: how platforms keep users from clicking throughWhy AI visibility tracking can’t be proven, and why budgets flow to it anywayTraffic down, revenue up: why higher-intent visitors matter more than volumeHow to build a correlation dashboard across the funnelMaking the case to your CFO: Oreo billboards, election spend and life without attributionHow to pick the one or two channels where your audience pays attentionWhy entertainment, a point of view and PR are redefining “valuable” contentGuest links: Connect with Rand Fishkin on LinkedIn SparkToro About the show: Get Discovered is a podcast from Prerender.io exploring the fundamentals of online discovery and machine experience. Why Machines Can’t See Your Site with Senior Product Manager, Venessa Chege

Brands say they're disappearing from search. They prompt ChatGPT, expect to show up, and don't. The instinct is to tweak content, but none of that matters if the machine can't get through the front door. In this episode of Get Discovered, we sit down with Venessa Chege, Senior Product Manager at Prerender.io, who led the research and build behind AI Insights, Prerender's tool for checking whether AI crawlers can access your site. They cover the version Prerender didn't build: a prompt-tracking tool for an already crowded market. They explain why the team refocused on access, and they're candid about the limits of that approach. If AI can't reach your page, it can't cite you, but fixing access doesn't guarantee citations. Venessa also shares a surprising finding: about half of the sites that ran the diagnostic had a major AI crawler blocked, mostly without knowing it. In this episode: Rendering explainedWhat "I'm disappearing from search" really means now that search is fragmentedAI Insights over prompt visibility monitoringAccess is the floor, not the party: what being reachable does and doesn't guaranteeFrom machines that read to machines that act, and why a closed gate removes you from the whole buyer journeyHow CDN and firewall rules set years ago are quietly blocking AI crawlers todayWhy you should check access before any content optimizationGuest links: Connect with Venessa Chege on LinkedIn About the show: Get Discovered is a podcast from Prerender.io exploring the fundamentals of online discovery and machine experience. Product-Led SEO and What AI Search Changed: Eli Schwartz, Author of Product-Led SEO

Rankings and impressions used to be the whole story. Now AI overviews answer the question before anyone clicks, and the dashboards that marketing teams have reported on for a decade are flashing red, even when the work hasn't gotten worse. In this episode of Get Discovered, host Joe Walsh sits down with Eli Schwartz, author of Product-Led SEO and the strategist who took SurveyMonkey's organic search from near-zero to a $200M-a-year growth driver through IPO. Eli has advised WordPress, Shutterstock, Quora, Gusto, and Mixpanel, and is currently writing his second book, Customer Intelligence. They dig into why "AEO" and "GEO" might just be new names for the same discipline, why the old split between head terms and long-tail keywords has quietly disappeared, and why the real shift isn't in how people search — it's in what happens to the metrics your boss is watching once the click stops being guaranteed. Eli also makes the case for why AI search is a net win for users even as it makes the marketer's job harder than it's ever been. In this episode: Why product-led SEO means building a product, not writing a blog postThe case against splitting "SEO" and "AEO" into separate hiresWhy every search term is now both long-tail and head term at onceHow Google's personalization has moved from session signals to persistent profile flagsThe SEO attribution crisis — and why teams can't fix it without the authority to change what's being measuredThe billboard analogy: what SEO can learn from how car brands justify ad spend they can't fully attributeWhat gets better and worse for marketers over the next 12–18 monthsGuest links: Connect with Eli Schwartz on LinkedInNewsletter: productledseo.comAbout the show: Get Discovered is a podcast from Prerender.io exploring the fundamentals of online discovery and machine experience.
