What is Oracy? It's coming to a school near you. And it's something that each and every one of us have experienced. Even if, for some if not most of us, it's a new word. (Not you educators - you're ahead of the game.) Join Al Booth as he looks into connection and communication through the eyes (and mouth and ears) of a former shy, unconfident child turned curious broadcaster. You'll hear open, honest, sometimes funny and often uplifting conversations with people from all walks of life about their journeys to finding their voice, and looking at how we can help the next generations find theirs through the beauty of oracy. From childhood shyness and classroom experiences to the moments that shaped who we are today, we'll explore the role discussion and ideas play in our lives and why oracy matters far beyond the classroom. Oracy And Beyond is about the power of speaking, listening and sharing our thoughts. Oracy is about creating equity from a young age so that the communicators in today's classrooms can make decisions based on respect and understanding in tomorrow's workplaces. Oracy is being added to the school curriculum in England. And it could just be the thing that leads to world peace. NOTE - This podcast is not claiming it will bring about world peace. In this episode Topsy shares thoughts from her Philosophy for Children approach to Oracy and the effect it has had on the children she has worked with.     From Expulsion to Shakespeare: How oracy can give a voice and a meaning to young people who haven't been listened to before - Sharon Gray

    "A student was excluded from a mainstream school in Coventry. He did display very challenging behaviour in the community as well. And we use the music studio a lot. So he started writing song lyrics, then he used these to construct his prose. And he's performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company in a short version of Midsummer Night's Dream. He's written the rap and he's also just done his English speaking board level two exam." - Sharon Gray Sharon Gray has the title of Head of English at the Alternative Provision she teaches at in Warwickshire.     "Oracy isn't just about learning to talk, it's about learning through talk. Tracie talks about how we should instruct instead of ask. Say "Thank You" instead of "Please". That alone would have saved hours of getting shoes on time over the years! 🏗️ The Foundations of OracyTracie highlights that oracy isn't just about learning to talk; it’s about learning through talk. It serves as the cognitive foundation for everything else, leveling the playing field before formal education even begins. The Developmental JourneyReceptive Language: Babies start by taking in all the information around them.Non-Verbal Cues: Communication begins through facial expressions and eye contact.The Pointing Phase: Children use gestures and simple utterances to label their world (e.g., "daddy," "car," "bottle").Vocabulary Bursts: Interest-based learning—like memorising every dinosaur name—fuels an explosion in vocabulary. 🛤️ Oracy as a Tool for EquityThe conversation emphasises that oracy is a primary area of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), alongside physical and personal-social development.
