When Successful Leaders Feel Pulled Toward Something New | The Small Batch

What happens when you're a successful leader, but something new keeps pulling at you? You've spent years building your career, your business, your reputation, and your leadership. You're good at what you do. What you've built is working. But lately, you may be noticing a pull toward something different. Maybe it's a new idea, another way of leading, or an interest you've been setting aside for years. And you're not necessarily looking to leave anything behind. So how do you explore something you don't fully understand without betting everything you've built on it? In this episode of Crafted Clarity, Steve Muscato explores the tension experienced leaders sometimes feel between the success they've built and what they might be built for in this season of life and leadership. Through real leadership stories and the craft of whiskey distilling, we examine a way to create opportunities to explore something new without immediately committing to where it might lead. And there's another question worth considering: What if the possibility of being right is just as complicated as being wrong? Sometimes, the experience reveals something we weren't even looking for. Who are you without the thing that helped define you?

What happens when something takes up more space in your life than you realize? And what happens when that something has become so intertwined with your identity that removing it changes far more than you expected? For Toni Will, that something was alcohol. Over time, drinking had become woven into how she socialized, celebrated, coped, rewarded herself and even how she saw herself. Then she removed it. What followed was bigger than giving up one habit. In this conversation, Toni and Steve explore what happens when something begins to occupy more of your identity than you realize, why Toni chose to “quit out loud,” what she started noticing once that space opened up, and how one act of removal began changing the way she saw herself, her work and what might come next. They also talk about identity shifts, redefining success, the fear that comes with letting go, and the whisper that tells you something is changing before you know exactly what comes next. For experienced leaders navigating questions of identity, purpose, significance, stewardship, career transition and what’s next after success. When Success Doesn't Feel the Way You Expected | The Tasting Notes Of Success

What happens when you've spent years building a successful career, business, or organization, achieved much of what you set out to create, and success doesn't feel the way you expected? For experienced leaders, founders, and business owners, there can come a moment later in their careers when they look at what they've built and realize that experiencing success feels different from what they imagined. The success is real. Their fingerprints are all over it. So what do we do with what we're feeling? In this episode of Crafted Clarity, Steve Muscato explores the tension between success, expectations, and what it's like to experience the results of something we've spent years intentionally creating. A conversation about whiskey tasting notes leads us into the work of the Master Distiller and a question that reaches beyond the glass: What happens when something we've deliberately crafted doesn't taste the way we thought it would? And what might be influencing that experience? In this episode: Why success can feel different from what we expected The relationship between achievement, expectations, and our experience of success What whiskey tasting notes can reveal about our perceptions How a Master Distiller's intentional craft mirrors the work of a leader Why different seasons and conditions may change what we're able to notice How The Work of the Distiller creates room to examine our experience before drawing conclusions This isn't a conversation about deciding that something is wrong with our success or that we need to move on from what we've built. It's an invitation to become curious about what we're experiencing, what we expected, and what might be worth noticing in this season of leadership. Why Successful Leaders Don’t Feel Ready for What’s Next | Caught Between Seasons?

What happens when want what’s next but still find yourself saying, “I’m just not ready”? I’ve been hearing some version of that from successful leaders who have spent decades making big decisions, taking risks and figuring things out as they went. That’s what makes this one interesting. You would think all of that experience would make a leadership transition - or figuring out what’s next - easier to see. Sometimes it doesn’t. You can picture yourself spending your time differently. You may be thinking more about purpose, meaning or legacy than you used to. Something about the next season keeps pulling at you. And still: I want it. But… So what exactly are we saying when we say we’re not ready? In this episode of Crafted Clarity, I sit in that tension and look at what starts happening when “someday” gets close enough to become real. Because there may be more underneath “I’m not ready” than we notice at first. If you’re a successful, experienced leader wondering what’s next in your career or leadership — and feeling caught somewhere between the season you’ve built and the one that keeps getting your attention — this conversation is for you. When Everyone Wants Clarity But You Don't Have It | When “I Don’t Know Yet” Is Leadership

Experienced leaders are expected to provide clarity. Set the strategy. Make the decision. Tell everyone where they're going. But what happens when the answer isn't clear yet? In this episode of Crafted Clarity, Steve Muscato explores leadership clarity, leading through uncertainty, decision-making and organizational change through the lens of The Work of the Distiller. When conditions are changing, the pressure to provide an answer can move faster than the work required to understand what's actually happening. That's when leaders can begin creating something that looks like clarity but isn't: Manufactured clarity. There's also an important distinction between clarity and confidence. A leader can communicate a plan with complete confidence and still be wrong about what the organization actually needs. The generations-old craft of whiskey distilling offers a different leadership posture. A Distiller doesn't control every condition or know exactly how everything will turn out. Experience gives them the ability to notice what's changing, work with the evidence, involve the people closest to the process and create the conditions where clarity can emerge. For executives, founders and experienced leaders navigating uncertainty, strategy, organizational alignment, change and what's next, this episode explores why “I don't know yet” isn't the same as “I don't know how to lead.” If this episode surfaced something you're carrying, continue the conversation in The Still at CraftedClarity.net. What If the Evidence of What's Next Is Already There? | A Year in the Barrel

What if the evidence of what's next is already there but you haven't noticed it yet? Experienced leaders sometimes find themselves carrying a tension they can't quite explain. Something that used to matter doesn't pull the same way. A question keeps coming back. An opportunity gets your attention. The work may still be successful, but something about your relationship to it has changed. You may not know what any of it means yet. That's where the barrel matters. A lot can happen during a season of waiting whether we notice it or not. Some things quietly lose their hold. Others become more important. Questions change. Priorities shift. And while none of that necessarily gives us an answer about what comes next, it does give us evidence worth examining. In Episode 52 of Crafted Clarity, we explore what a year spent "in the barrel" can produce while we're busy leading, building, waiting, and trying to make sense of the tension we're carrying. Along the way, the whiskey-making concept of the Angel's Share gives us a way to examine what has quietly evaporated — and what has become more concentrated over time. This conversation explores: Why successful leaders can feel unsettled even when things are going wellWhat can change while you're waiting for clarityWhy noticing may matter before deciding what to do nextWhat happens when old priorities quietly lose their holdWhat becomes more concentrated as other things fall awayHow the questions change when time begins to matter differentlyWhat it means to think like a Distiller — noticing, examining, and creating the right conditions This episode marks 52 consecutive weekly episodes of Crafted Clarity and the beginning of Season 3 - a deeper exploration of The Work of the Distiller. If you're carrying a question you can't quite answer, you may not need to force the answer yet. You may need to examine the barrel. ABOUT CRAFTED CLARITY Crafted Clarity is for successful leaders navigating the tension between what they've built and what they're built for. Each week, Steve Muscato uses the craft of whiskey distillation as a lens for conversations about leadership, purpose, significance, stewardship, and the questions that begin to change as we move into a different season. The goal isn't to hand you answers. It's to create the conditions to notice what's already there, ask better questions, and discern what matters now. Bring the question you're carrying to The Still and explore more at CraftedClarity.net.
