The Unbreakable Marine: 70+ Surgeries, 3 Near-Death Experiences, and the Choice to Never Quit with Jay Setchell

Have you ever felt paralyzed by the circumstances in your life? Whether it is a career setback, a health crisis, or a seemingly insurmountable personal obstacle, it is easy to feel like throwing in the towel. But what if the very things that break you down are exactly what you need to build an unbreakable spirit? Welcome back to Eagle Freedom Presents. Today, we are bringing you an episode that embodies the absolute core of the Rise, Inspire, and Overcome movement. My guest is Jay Setchell, a 76-year-old United States Marine Corps veteran whose life story reads like an unbelievable Hollywood script. Jay has survived multiple near-death experiences , endured over 70 surgeries—including 15 back surgeries —and currently navigates life from a power wheelchair. Yet, instead of quietly retiring, he has built multiple eight-figure companies and is actively raising eight-year-old twin grandchildren alongside his wife. In this deeply moving and raw conversation, Jay and I sit down to unpack what it takes to forge true grit. We trace his resilience back to his childhood on a working farm in Northern Illinois, where he learned the profound responsibility of the seasons and the ultimate life lesson: "If it is to be, it is up to me". That relentless work ethic seamlessly transitioned into his service in the Marine Corps, preparing him for battles he never saw coming. Jay shares the harrowing details of the accidents that altered the trajectory of his life forever. From a devastating 1969 car crash where he was trapped in a burning vehicle and clinically died on the operating table , to being hit head-on by a drunk driver just four years later. He also opens up about the fateful Fourth of July in 1981 when a jump into a swimming pool resulted in a broken neck and a drowning experience that sent him into a terrifying vortex before being pulled back to life. But this episode isn't just a survival story; it is a masterclass in mindset, leadership, and extreme ownership. Despite facing paralysis, chronic spinal pain, a battle with MRSA that carried a 20% survival rate, and a five-month fight against COVID-19, Jay continuously chose to rise. We dive into how he translated his survival instincts into becoming a highly successful corporate problem-solver and serial entrepreneur, taking projects from zero to massive international success. In this episode, you will discover: The Farm & The Brotherhood: How the demanding responsibilities of agriculture and the rigorous discipline of the USMC created an unshakable foundation for facing life's ultimate tests. Surviving the Unimaginable: A firsthand account of near-death experiences, the mental toll of spending years in hospitals, and how faith offset the grim predictions of doctors. The Power of Staying Busy: Why keeping your hands and mind occupied is the greatest antidote to chronic pain and frustration. Entrepreneurship Through Adversity: How Jay maintained three businesses at a time, viewing challenges through the lens of a corporate problem-solver, and why building custom homes taught him the joy of details. Serving as a Growth Strategy: Why true freedom means having the ability to act on your beliefs, and why helping others is the ultimate way to heal yourself. Jay’s defining motto is simple but life-changing: "It's always too soon to quit". If you are ready to stop kicking the can down the road and start facing your obstacles with the courage of a Marine, hit play right now. "You Always Were Worthy" – Healing from Abuse and Finding Your Authentic Self with Wendy Lynn Myers

This episode contains a raw and deeply emotional conversation that includes discussion of abuse and sexual assault. While Wendy's story is ultimately one of incredible triumph and freedom, the details may be sensitive for some viewers. Please take care while listening. Welcome to Eagle Freedom Presents. In this powerful episode, host Deston is joined by Wendy Lynn Myers, a 360-degree health and trauma coach. At 44 years old, Wendy embarked on a journey to take back her life after enduring decades of psychological, emotional, physical, and religious abuse. She opens up about navigating a 30-year marriage with an asexual man with Asperger's, overcoming the deep self-doubt instilled by her family, and facing corrupt judges as a natural competitor in the bodybuilding world. Turning Pain into Purpose After surviving a sexual assault at the age of 46, Wendy made a life-altering decision. Instead of spending $25,000 on a coach to heal herself, she invested it into earning certifications so she could help others. She realized that the missing link in the wellness industry was nervous system health. Phoenix Rising Fitness Wendy explains how unresolved trauma physically manifests in the body and why our nervous systems get stuck in a state of distress and "fight or flight" mode. Through her business, Phoenix Rising Fitness, she offers a transformative wellness program focusing on four critical pillars: mental health, spiritual health, physical health, and nervous system health. By teaching her clients how to respond to life instead of reacting, Wendy provides the tools needed to achieve authentic freedom. Left for Dead at 17 to Transforming Youth | Master Cosmo Zimik

At 17 years old, my guest today was tortured, shot, and left to bleed out in the war-torn jungles of Northeast India. When he finally opened his eyes, he didn't choose revenge. He chose purpose. Welcome back to Eagle Freedom Presents. In this powerful episode, I sit down with a man I am deeply honored to call a friend—Master Cosmo Zimik, a 6th-degree black belt and the visionary founder of Empty Hand Combat in Idaho. Cosmo's journey didn't begin in a traditional dojo; it started in a literal war zone. Raised in survival poverty and surrounded by militant violence, he fought daily just to stay alive. But after a brutal near-death experience and a profound spiritual awakening, Cosmo realized his life had been spared for a much bigger reason. He eventually made his way to the States, cashed out his entire retirement savings, and built a sanctuary for our community's most vulnerable. Today, Master Cosmo takes angry, at-risk youth—including active gang members—and teaches them lethal martial arts so they learn not to use them. He is redefining what it means to be a true warrior by instilling humility, discipline, and hope into kids who felt completely forgotten by society. Having walked the mats at his dojo, looked his students in the eye, and stood alongside him at a recent fundraiser, I can tell you firsthand: the absolute respect he commands and the life-saving transformations happening in that room are undeniable. In this episode, we dive into: Surviving the Unimaginable: The mindset required to overcome paralyzing fear and extreme trauma.Redefining "Toughness": Why Cosmo believes the biggest lie about being a tough guy is simply a cover for laziness.Stories from the Street: Unbelievable accounts of transformation, from a gang enforcer turning his life around to young kids finding a true home at the dojo. The Empty Hand Philosophy: How everyday people can step up, empty their cups, and be a light for a struggling neighbor or youth. The True Cost of Freedom: Cosmo’s profound, hard-earned definition of what freedom looks like through the eyes of a survivor. 8. From Trauma to Triumph: Tineka Dawn's Journey of Resilience and Manifestation

    FEB 25

From Trauma to Triumph: Tineka Dawn's Journey of Resilience and Manifestation

Welcome to another powerful episode of Eagle Freedom Presents! I'm your host, Deston Rogers, and today we are leaning fully into our mantra: Rise, Inspire, Overcome. Sometimes, a higher power orchestrates connections that leave you absolutely speechless. Before we dive into today’s story, my guest and I share a mind-blowing "God-incidence." While coordinating this interview, we realized our paths crossed years ago in Moab, Utah, when she won rodeo tickets from me, while I was working at KCYN radio! It’s a beautiful full-circle moment proving the timing of this conversation is no accident. Joining me is Tineka Dawn, a trauma-informed coach, speaker, author, and founder of Dawning Bliss Coaching in Twin Falls, Idaho. Tineka's life is a staggering testament to human resilience. Born into instability, she navigated early trauma, homelessness, and domestic violence. She became a mother at 16, emancipated to marry, and graduated high school with an infant. By 20, she was a divorced single mother raising three toddlers. Driven by a fierce desire to provide stability, she purchased her first home within seven months and launched a successful hauling business by age 25. But surviving financially didn't shield her from heartbreak. After 11 years of struggling through the dating world and tolerating toxic behavior, Tineka reached a breaking point at 26. Her heart was "hulk-smashed" right before a wedding by a non-committal narcissist. Instead of letting it destroy her, she used the devastation as a catalyst. She took five years for intense personal development, healing her traumas, fixing her money mindset, and becoming an "intentional dater." Her deep work led her to manifest her dream husband and a thriving, abundant family life. Her journey of overcoming didn't stop there. In 2024, she was struck by a severe, rare "zebra illness"—diagnosed with a CSF leak and bilateral carotid tumors. Left largely bed-bound, she was forced to redefine her self-worth completely outside of her physical productivity. Amazingly, amidst this grueling medical battle, she returned to college and graduated summa cum laude in psychology in December 2025. Today, Tineka uses her lived experience to help others navigate post-traumatic growth. Her unfiltered message perfectly embodies the #RIOMovement: "You are not defined by what happened to you—but you are responsible for what you build from it." In this episode, we discuss: • Our serendipitous shared history in Moab and the power of perfect timing. • Defying the statistical odds of early childhood trauma and teen pregnancy. • Finding the courage to leave toxic relationships and manifest true love. • The entrepreneurial hustle to build and launch Dawning Bliss Coaching. • Finding authentic freedom while battling a debilitating rare illness. If you are facing an uphill battle or need a reminder of what you are truly capable of overcoming, this episode will change your perspective. Learn more about Tineka and her book, The Money Mindset Makeover, at Dawning Bliss Coaching.
