Vulnerability vs. Authenticity: What’s the Difference?

Send us Fan Mail Being “real” is popular. Being truly known is harder, and sometimes it feels risky for a reason. We sit down for a candid, faith-filled conversation about authenticity vs vulnerability, why they are not the same thing, and how we can tell when we are sharing from obedience instead of insecurity. Along the way, we also share some life updates, including a sweet and hilarious moment when friends found out about a new baby on the way. We unpack a simple but challenging idea: authenticity is living congruent with who we are in Christ, while vulnerability is choosing to be seen when rejection or misunderstanding is possible. We talk about how culture often celebrates “say whatever you feel,” but Scripture calls us to discernment, self-control, and sanctification. We also get practical about oversharing, the “vulnerability hangover,” and how to tell the difference between sharing a healed scar versus bleeding from an open wound. If you have ever curated your honesty to keep control, avoid disappointment, or win approval, this will hit close to home. From a therapist lens, we discuss self-disclosure, shame, and what it looks like to build safe relationships where trust is earned over time. We share a real story of feeling prompted to pray with a stranger, arguing with the Holy Spirit, and then stepping into obedience anyway. Finally, we answer the “ground zero” question: where do you start if you have never practised vulnerability? Our answer begins with prayer and honest worship, because God is safe and He already knows. Vulnerability in Scripture: What Does God Say About Being Vulnerable?

Send us Fan Mail Hiding can feel like protection, but Scripture tells a different story. Today we are digging into biblical vulnerability and why God so often meets us in the exact places we want to cover up. If you’ve ever wondered whether being “vulnerable” is wise, biblical, or just another pressure to overshare, this conversation gives you language, clarity, and a foundation you can actually build on. We start by defining vulnerability as exposure with risk, then separate authenticity from vulnerability so we don’t confuse honesty with indiscriminate access. From there, we trace the theme through the Bible: Genesis shows openness without shame in the Garden, and then sin introduces hiding, fear, and the kind of shame that says “I am wrong.” That same shame still tempts us to keep weakness out of God’s presence, even though he already knows us fully and invites us closer with the question, “Where are you?” We also look at how God uses weakness as a doorway to dependence. Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 12:9 anchor the heart of the message: God’s grace is sufficient, and his power is made perfect in weakness. Finally, we turn to Jesus as the ultimate example of surrendered vulnerability. Philippians 2 shows him laying down status to serve, and we see the cross as the obedient vulnerability.  We also talk about boundaries, wise levels of access, and what it means to become a safe person who protects other people’s vulnerability. Welcome to Season Three: Let's Talk About Vulnerability

Send us Fan Mail Vulnerability is one of those words that can make your shoulders tense before you even define it. We get it, because we feel it too, and we’re still showing up. Season 3 of Table of Grace starts with the real stuff: summer chaos, lonely ag-wife evenings, parenting when you need backup, and the small moments where God meets us anyway. Courtney & Tessah also share highlights from their North Carolina trip for the She Speaks conference and an unexpectedly emotional visit to the Billy Graham Library, where we’re reminded that faith isn’t a brand, it’s a life surrendered. From those conversations and the questions we kept hearing, one theme grew to the top: Christian vulnerability. Not oversharing, not attention-seeking, and not ignoring wisdom or boundaries. We’re talking about the kind of honesty that stops hiding from God, stops pretending with people, and finally names the real barrier underneath our “I’m fine.”  We explore why we chase external validation, why performance feels safer than intimacy, and why God isn’t asking us to manage His emotions. He already knows what we’re mad about, anxious about, or ashamed of, and He still invites us close. We also unpack a line that can change your inner world: normal and healthy are not the same thing. If your normal is self-protection, self-criticism, or silence because you were hurt before, you’re not stuck there.  This conversation sets the foundation for a full season on vulnerability in your relationship with Jesus, in friendship, and in everyday life.  Share this with a friend & get ready to get vulnerable. Good Girl Complex Series Recap (What We Learned & Real Life Takeaways)

Send us Fan Mail If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing all the “right” things and still feel anxious, guilty, or not quite lovable, this recap is for you. We sit down at the Table of Grace to wrap up our Good Girl Complex series and name what’s really happening underneath the pressure to perform: shame, people pleasing, comparison, control, and the belief that rest has to be earned. We walk back through the stories that shaped the series, from Eve’s hiding and God’s gentle questions, to Sarah’s grasp for control when waiting feels unbearable, to Hagar’s wilderness where the God who sees calls her by name. We also talk Leah and Rachel and the way comparison turns life into a moving finish line, plus the Samaritan woman who is fully known by Jesus and still invited into purpose. Along the way, we share what listeners told us hit home most, and what we’re still learning in real time. Then we slow down with two moments that cut straight to the heart: the bleeding woman who risks everything for one touch of Jesus, and Mary and Martha, where we confront the lie that “good girls can’t rest.”  Our biggest takeaway stays simple and challenging: the way out of striving is not trying harder, it’s sitting at the feet of Jesus and trusting Him to be who He says He is. If this series mashed your toes in the best way, share it with a friend, subscribe so you don’t miss what’s next, and leave a review to help more women find a seat at the table. Good Girl Complex Part 7 (From Striving to Sitting With Jesus)

Send us Fan Mail You can be exhausted without ever leaving the couch. That’s the kind of striving we’re talking about today, the hidden inner unrest that keeps so many of us moving, fixing, hosting, over-functioning, and still feeling far from peace.  We start with real “table talk” about end-of-school-year burnout, the pressure to perform, and how technology turns service into a nonstop stream of work, notifications, and mental load.  Then we open Scripture and trace Mary and Martha across Luke 10, John 11, and John 12. We look at what Jesus actually says to Martha when she’s anxious and distracted, and why Mary’s posture at His feet is more than a sweet image.  We connect it to the good girl complex and the lie that says, “The more I do, the more valuable I am,” and we bring in a therapy lens with attachment language: anxious striving to earn love versus secure rest that receives love as a gift.  John 11 takes it deeper. Jesus delays, Lazarus dies, and both sisters say, “If you had been here…” and still, Jesus stays present. He weeps. He doesn’t rush past grief just because He can fix the problem, and that reshapes how we understand healing, disappointment, and what it means to be held by God in hard feelings. We also talk about what it looks like to invite Jesus into everyday moments when a perfect quiet time isn’t possible, and how to choose the main thing again.  If this conversation hits home, share it with a friend who’s tired, subscribe so you don’t miss the recap, and leave a review so more women can find a seat at the table. Good Girl Complex Part 5 (The Woman At The Well)

Send us Fan Mail She shows up at the well when no one else would be there, carrying more than a water jar, carrying shame, isolation, and a story she would rather keep quiet. Then Jesus does the unthinkable: he goes straight through Samaria, sits down, and starts a conversation with the very person the culture would have overlooked. John 4 is not just a famous Bible passage; it is a spotlight on the heart of God and a mirror for anyone trapped in the good girl complex.  We talk through the Samaritan woman’s encounter with Jesus, the tension between Jews and Samaritans, and why it mattered that a Jewish rabbi spoke to a woman alone in public. We also wrestle with the assumptions people make about her past and ask a harder question: what if she wasn’t the problem, but the one everyone blamed? We trace how Jesus names what is true without shaming, and how being fully known becomes the beginning of real healing.  If you have ever felt like you have to look perfect to be accepted, or you have hidden parts of your story because Christians can be judgmental, this conversation is for you. We keep coming back to one simple invitation: you do not have to clean up first. Put the bucket down, lift your eyes, and let Jesus meet you right where you are.  Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review telling us what part of this story you cannot stop thinking about.
