Nutrition + Surgical Client + Client Education

The sources provide a multi-faceted overview of crucial clinical concepts concerning client nutrition and the management of surgical patients, alongside the nurse's central role in patient education. A large portion of the material addresses nutritional requirements, explaining the function of macronutrients and detailing various therapeutic diets—ranging from clear liquid to specialized renal or heart-healthy plans—as well as the administration and risks associated with enteral and parenteral nutrition. Discussions about the surgical client cover all phases of care, highlighting the importance of a thorough preoperative assessment to identify surgical risk factors, such as age and smoking history, and necessary preparations like removing valuables and piercings. Postoperative care is stressed, focusing on preventing complications like fluid imbalances and aspiration, while ensuring pain control and assessing for signs of internal bleeding or infection. Finally, the texts establish that nurses make up the largest percentage of the healthcare team and must execute effective client teaching, ensuring clients are motivated and instruction is appropriate for their health literacy level.

    Tissue Integrity

These sources provide a comprehensive overview of tissue integrity, focusing heavily on the assessment, prevention, and treatment of pressure injuries (also known as pressure ulcers) and other types of wounds. The texts detail the layers of the skin and various risk factors that predispose patients to tissue breakdown, such as immobility, malnutrition, and moisture. Significant attention is given to the staging of pressure injuries (Stage 1 through 4, unstageable, and deep tissue injuries), as well as the classifications and measurement of acute and chronic wounds. Finally, the sources review different wound management strategies, including the use of the Braden Scale, various wound dressings (e.g., films, hydrocolloids), wound drains (e.g., Penrose, Jackson-Pratt, Hemovac), and wound healing intentions and phases.

    Grief, End-of-Life, Sleep and Pain

The sources consist of audio transcripts, likely from a nursing lecture, that focus on three critical aspects of patient care: grief and end-of-life care, sleep, and pain management. Discussions on grief emphasize the importance of a nurse's presence and silence when dealing with patients and families, covering topics like anticipatory and prolonged grief, different cultural and religious needs, and models such as the Kubler-Ross stages. The section on sleep stresses its necessity for tissue repair and cognitive function, detailing sleep stages, factors that impair rest, and interventions to promote better sleep hygiene. Finally, the segment on pain addresses the subjective nature of pain, the importance of using comprehensive assessment tools like the PQRST scale, and the various pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods for management, including the safe use of Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pumps and precautions regarding drug diversion.

    Fluid, Electrolytes, and Acid-Base Balance

The provided sources offer a comprehensive overview of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance within the human body, emphasizing the nurse's role in assessment and intervention. They explain the physiological functions of major electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium) and detail the signs, causes, and treatments for various imbalances like dehydration, hypovolemia, and hypervolemia. Crucially, the texts cover intravenous therapy, outlining the types of solutions (isotonic, hypotonic, hypertonic crystalloids, and colloids), venous access devices (peripheral and central lines), and procedures for safe administration, including blood product transfusions with stringent safety protocols. Finally, the sources explain acid-base imbalances (respiratory and metabolic acidosis and alkalosis), how to interpret arterial blood gas (ABG) values, and the corresponding compensatory mechanisms and treatments.

    Oxygenation and Gas Exchange Fundamentals

The provided sources offer a comprehensive overview of cardiopulmonary function and gas exchange, focusing heavily on nursing assessment and interventions. They detail the structure and physiology of the respiratory and circulatory systems, explaining key concepts such as ventilation, perfusion, cardiac output, and the electrical conduction of the heart. The texts also enumerate various alterations in function, including hypoxemia, hypoxia, different types of heart failure, and arrhythmias, alongside associated risk factors. Finally, a significant portion of the material covers therapeutic interventions such as oxygen delivery methods (e.g., nasal cannula, various masks), respiratory techniques (e.g., incentive spirometry, pursed-lip breathing), and procedural care like suctioning and chest tube management.

Urinary and Bowel Elimination Video (Watch on Spotify)

The source provides an extensive overview of urinary and bowel elimination, detailing the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of both systems. It explains the functions of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, bladder, and ureters, and discusses factors influencing urination, such as disease conditions and medications. The text also categorizes different types of urinary incontinence and discusses conditions like UTIs and kidney stones, alongside relevant medical interventions and diagnostic tests. Regarding bowel elimination, the source describes the gastrointestinal tract, factors affecting defecation, common bowel problems like constipation and diarrhea, and management techniques including enemas and ostomies, concluding with nursing interventions for both elimination processes.
