    #46 Project 112: The Tests They Ran on Their Own Sailors

    Project 112 and Project SHAD were run out of the Deseret Test Center in Salt Lake City from 1962 to 1973, and the military denied both existed until CBS broke the story in May 2000. Sailors aboard the USS George Eastman and USS Granville S. Hall were exposed to sarin, VX, Q fever, and tularemia. Aircraft sprayed Oahu. One test ran inside Pearl Harbor. In March 1968 a VX release at Dugway Proving Ground drifted 27 miles into Skull Valley and killed thousands of sheep, and the Army paid rancher Alvin Hatch $376,685 while admitting nothing.     45. Mokele-Mbembe: Hunting a Living Dinosaur in the Congo

    In 1913, a German army captain wrote down the first account of mokele-mbembe, a creature Congo Basin locals said could stop the flow of rivers. Since then, researchers including biochemist Roy Mackal and engineer Herman Regusters have led expeditions to Lake Tele hoping to prove a living dinosaur survived extinction. We cover the 1981 Regusters sighting, the 1983 Agnagna encounter, the creationist funding behind many of the searches, and why sightings are climbing again today.     42. The Enfield Poltergeist: Did His Own Son Really Confirm It?

    In August 1977, eleven-year-old Janet Hodgson and her family reported furniture moving on its own at 284 Green Street in Enfield, London, in a case investigated for two years by the Society for Psychical Research's Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair. Witnesses included a police constable, two Daily Mirror photographers, and a physics graduate student, and the case's strangest piece of evidence — a voice claiming to be a dead former resident named Bill Wilkins — was matched to his real son live on the radio.     41. Blue Peacock: The Nuclear Bomb Heated by Live Chickens

    Two Cold War weapons programs that sound invented and aren't. Project Blue Peacock was Britain's plan to bury ten atomic landmines on the North German Plain, designed at Fort Halstead in Kent and ordered by the Army Council in July 1957. Operation Popeye was the American cloud-seeding campaign flown out of Udorn, Thailand between 1967 and 1972, under the crew call sign Motorpool. Both are fully declassified now. Both came out sideways — one through an exhibition case at the National Archives, the other through a newspaper column and a Secretary of Defense who corrected his own sworn testimony eighteen months after he gave it.
