    New EHV-1 Treatment Breakthrough? Every Treated Horse Survived EHM

    Can valacyclovir and heparin help horses survive EHV-1 and its severe neurologic form, equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy? A newly published Virginia Tech study found that horses treated with this antiviral and anticoagulant combination had a lower incidence of EHM and better survival during naturally occurring EHV-1 outbreaks. All horses that received the combination therapy survived, including several horses affected by EHM that later returned to work.¹ Researchers reviewed 111 horses naturally exposed to EHV-1. Twenty-two horses were confirmed positive, and nine developed EHM. Four infected horses that did not receive valacyclovir or heparin developed grade 5 out of 5 ataxia and were euthanized. In comparison, every horse treated with the combination survived.¹ These findings are extremely promising, but this was a small, retrospective outbreak study—not proof of a guaranteed cure. The horses were not randomly assigned to treatment groups, and additional controlled research is needed. Researchers believe the medications may work together by limiting viral activity and reducing harmful clot formation associated with vascular injury. These are prescription medications that require veterinary diagnosis, dosing, supervision, and monitoring. Never administer valacyclovir, heparin, or another prescription medication without direct veterinary guidance. Heparin can cause serious bleeding complications when used incorrectly. Early EHV-1 signs may include fever, nasal discharge, depression, reduced appetite, and limb swelling. Neurologic signs can include toe dragging, stumbling, hind-limb weakness, urine dribbling, tail weakness, leaning, difficulty standing, or an inability to rise. If your horse develops a fever or neurologic abnormalities, isolate the horse and contact your veterinarian immediately. Do not force a neurologically impaired horse to walk.     Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Outbreak Spreads (VSV): What Horse Owners Need to Know Now

    New cases of vesicular stomatitis virus, or VSV, have been reported in horses in southwestern Colorado as the larger outbreak continues across the Southwest. What is vesicular stomatitis in horses? How does VSV spread? What symptoms should horse owners watch for, and what happens when an equine property is placed under quarantine? In this video, we explain the current vesicular stomatitis outbreak, including the affected Colorado counties and the latest case numbers reported by federal animal-health officials. We also discuss how biting midges, black flies, and sand flies may spread the virus—even to horses that have never left their property. Veterinary care generally focuses on pain management, hydration, nutrition, supportive care, and preventing secondary infections. Most horses recover, but healing may take several weeks. If your horse develops unexplained drooling, difficulty eating, blister-like lesions, or sudden lameness associated with coronary-band sores, isolate the horse and contact your veterinarian immediately.     New Study Reveals What a Tight Noseband Really Does to Your Horse!

    Can a tight noseband shorten your horse’s stride and negatively affect performance? A 2025 study published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science found that increasing noseband tightness dramatically raised pressure on the horse’s face while reducing stride length. When researchers tightened the noseband from the recommended two-finger setting to a zero-finger fit, peak facial pressure increased by 338 percent. At the same time, the horses’ strides became an average of 11.1 percent shorter—approximately the length of a hoof disappearing from every stride. In this video, we discuss: How noseband tightness was measured using a standardized taper gauge The difference between two-finger, one-finger, and zero-finger settings How tighter nosebands affected facial pressure and stride length Why a closed mouth does not always represent acceptance of the bit How noseband pressure may affect horse welfare and performance Why standardized noseband gauges may be more reliable than the traditional finger test What riders should consider when fitting a cavesson or crank noseband A noseband is not automatically harmful, but excessive tightening may restrict normal jaw movement, conceal signs of discomfort, and change the horse’s way of going.     Double Bridles BANNED at Third Level? New USEF Dressage Rule Explained

    A major USEF dressage rule change is coming to Third Level. Beginning December 1, 2026, double bridles will no longer be permitted in Third Level competition. Riders will be required to compete in an approved snaffle bridle, while double bridles will remain optional at Fourth Level and above. Why is USEF making Third Level snaffle-only, and what does this change mean for dressage riders, training, and horse welfare? In this video, we examine the purpose behind the new USEF dressage rule and the distinction it creates between Third and Fourth Level. We also discuss whether horses should be able to demonstrate collection, balance, flying changes, lateral movements, and genuine self-carriage without the added leverage of a curb bit. A double bridle can provide refined communication when it is properly fitted and used by an experienced rider. However, it can also create additional pressure and give riders more influence over the horse’s head and neck. This raises an important welfare question: Can a double bridle create the appearance of collection before a horse has developed the strength and balance required for true collection? The rule does not mean every double bridle is cruel or every snaffle is gentle. The effect of any bit depends on its design, fit, the horse’s anatomy, and the rider’s hands. Ultimately, this discussion is about whether competition rules can encourage more progressive training, greater harmony, and better protection for developing dressage horses.
