Fighting Invisible Poverty in Switzerland with Claudio Borio from Winterhilfe

How Winterhilfe Basel Supports Families and the Working Poor This episode explores "invisible" poverty in Switzerland through a conversation with Claudia Burio, a board member of Winterhilfe Basel, a charity founded in 1936 to provide winter relief and now offering year-round, targeted support to people just above the poverty line. Winterhilfe helps Swiss residents by paying urgent health and housing bills, providing in-kind aid such as clothing packages, and supporting children's schooling and meaningful leisure activities, including a special fund inspired by the Swiss "Gotti" concept. The Basel chapter operates with a six-member board, a small staff and volunteers, and relies heavily on donations, distributing most of its annual income directly as assistance while facing growing fundraising challenges. The discussion covers poverty thresholds, debt risks, how to seek help, and how to support Winterhilfe through donations, awareness, and potential volunteering. 2. Tackling Loneliness in Switzerland With Olivier Seiler - The GoodNews Letter

Tackling Loneliness in Switzerland With Olivier Seiler - The GoodNews Letter

My Ear for You - Just Talk: A Volunteer Phone Line Tackling Loneliness in Switzerland In this conversation, Dr. Olivier Seiler explains the origins and growth of the Swiss initiative "Mein Ohr für Dich" ("My Ear for You"), launched in March 2021 during COVID to offer lonely people a low-threshold way to chat with a real person. The service is not a crisis or suicide helpline. Volunteers mainly discuss everyday topics, and refer distressed callers to other organizations when needed. Around 50 screened and trained volunteers take shifts from home, supported by regular coaching and supervision from founders Philippe (psychologist) and Daniella (coach), plus team gatherings three times a year. The project expanded from an elderly-focused inspiration (the UK's "Silver Line") to all ages and includes a "Tandem Friends" option for weekly calls with the same volunteer while remaining anonymous and not meeting in person. They also discuss loneliness as a taboo in Switzerland, the limits of virtual connection. About The GoodNews Letter 💕 Hey there, if your newsfeed feels a bit dark lately, you're not alone. Flea Markets in Switzerland With Andrea Otto

Andrea Otto on Basel's Neighborhood Flea Markets Sustainability, Community, and a 10-Year Expansion Andrea Otto, a Basel local and owner of the sustainable clothing store Riviera, discusses Quartier Flohmarkt Basel, a neighborhood-based flea market concept held on private property in backyards. Inspired by Munich, she and her colleagues launched it in Kleinbasel and Wettstein, and it grew over 10 years to 17 neighbourhoods across Basel, running April to October on most weekends. Otto emphasizes the project's social value, individuality, "treasure hunt" appeal, and sustainability through reuse rather than disposal. She explains how to participate via quartierflohmarkt.ch, using maps or balloon markers to find stands, and notes extras like the free "Bring und Nimm" tent for donating unsold items. After a decade and growing personal commitments, the three-person core team is handing over leadership, with strong interest from new volunteers to continue.  Subscribe to Audio Story With Ajita: Podcast ( Spotify | YouTube | Apple ) About Audio Story With Ajita: Audio Story With Ajita is a daily, English-language, podcast that delivers daily news from Basel, Switzerland. Every March, the Women's History Month celebrates the historical and contemporary contributions of women to society. Listen to Anna's and Emélie's journey, their dramatically different paths in life that led them to the identical, proverbial, doorstep of this historic moment. While Anna comes from Sweden, Emélie was born and raised in Basel. We talk about what it means to them to be part of this legacy, how they have processed this media attention, their love for Basel and it's culture, and how they became unlikely trailblazers and pioneers. A lesson or two about how to feel belonged, tips and tricks on taking that first step into unknown territory to feel at home.
