Why Does Avoiding Anxiety Make it Worse??

You’ve probably heard that the antidote to anxiety is facing your fears. What you probably haven’t heard is exactly why avoiding them makes everything worse, and how the brain gets quietly tricked into staying stuck even when you think you’re doing the work. Checking on your kid who’s driving? Seeking reassurance from someone you trust? Even reaching for your phone mid-exposure? All of it counts as avoidance, and all of it resets the clock. In this episode, Roxy and Stephanie walk through the full anxiety treatment toolkit: graduated exposure hierarchies you can actually build yourself, the difference between courage and bravery (they are not the same word), why benzos might be working against you, what beta blockers do to the brain-body feedback loop, and grounding techniques that range from the clinical to the genuinely surprising. One of them involves your butt. It works. Rich Thoughts, Poor Jokes, is brought to you by Compass Coaching. Actually Do Hard S*** – Goal Setting, Systems, and Getting Unstuck

Motivation is not the thing that gets hard stuff done. A good system is. And there is a real difference between those two things. The goal needs to start with a why that actually holds up under pressure. Not a vague image of who you want to be, but something tied closely enough to your values that it can carry you through the parts where it stops feeling good. Most goals stall not because people are lazy but because the plan was never built to survive contact with real life. Willpower gets way too much credit. What actually looks like willpower in the people who seem to have it is usually just smart environmental design and a few well-placed habits that take the decision out of the moment entirely. There is also something worth hearing about your future self, why good enough is sometimes the smarter standard, and what to do when the only move left is to make the next step smaller. It's Not Laziness: The Real Reasons You Keep Getting Stuck

Feeling stuck is not the same as being unmotivated. Sometimes something specific is in the way, and until you name it, no mindset shift or productivity hack is going to move you. Anxiety keeps you from starting. Depression drains the energy the whole system runs on. ADHD scrambles the planning and self-supervision that getting hard things done actually requires. Burnout is different from all of those, and pushing harder when you are burnt out makes things worse, not better. Then there are the quieter culprits. If only statements. Vague goals with no real system behind them. Values that are pulling in a different direction than the goal you set. Distractions that feel like breaks but are actually your nervous system running a very convincing escape route. This episode is about knowing which one you are dealing with before you try to fix it. Was It a Bad Night or a Real Sleep Disorder? Here’s How to Tell Difference

A little insomnia some nights is normal. So is oversleeping after a hard week. The real question is whether your daytime life is falling apart because of it. Most people are using words like insomnia and hypersomnia without knowing what they actually mean clinically, and the gap between the internet's definition and the real one might surprise you. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder all tangle with sleep in ways that go both directions. Sometimes the mental health condition disrupts the sleep. Sometimes it's the other way around. Untangling which one came first matters more than people realize. And then there's sleep apnea, a confusing topic if there ever was one. What separates a snore from something that needs a doctor's attention? What does a CPAP machine actually do, and why do so many people avoid finding out if they need one? This closes out the sleep series. Send your questions to richthoughtspoorjokes@gmail.com and stay tuned for what's coming next. Rich Thoughts, Poor Jokes, is brought to you by Compass Coaching.
