    The Slayton Mercantile

On this episode of The Last Best Podcast, we talk about the Slayton Mercantile located in the tiny town of Lavina! This location is actually not the original location of Lavina, and this is not the original mercantile. The original was built in 1908 and burned down in 1910. It was rebuilt in the same location. The SMCo as it was referred to, experienced some success over its 90 year history. It played an instrumental role in the homesteading of the area in the early 1900s when many people were making their way out west. According to google, it now serves the community as an entertainment venue. The Grant-Kohrs Ranch

On this episode of The Last Best Podcast, we discuss the beginning of the cattle ranching industry in Montana. Starting with how men heading west to work as fur traders would transition into raising cattle as they saw the decline in demand for animal fur. One of those fur traders, Johnny Grant, would start what is known today as the Grant-Kohrs Ranch, which would become one of the longest running ranches in Montana. Grant, and later, Conrad Kohrs would survive many changes in the industry, while meticulously cataloguing its operations. Today, it is still run as a working ranch by the National Park Service and is also a National Historic Site. Thank you so much for listening! Follow us on instagram @lastbestpod.
