Belleau Wood Tavern

🎙️ Tavern Talk: Stories from the Belleau Wood Tavern Hosted by Belleau Wood Tavern Co-Founders Zachary Green & Roy Dakroub Welcome to Tavern Talk, the official podcast of the Belleau Wood Tavern — broadcasting from the legendary Ascension Bar, built with reclaimed Marine Corps history and forged in the same spirit that gave birth to the United States Marine Corps 250 years ago. Here, every story begins with a toast and ends with a lesson in honor, courage, and commitment. Co-founders Zachary Green, a U.S. Marine veteran, firefighter, entrepreneur, and author, and Roy Dakroub, an active-duty Marine officer, bring together voices from the past and present — sharing stories of leadership, sacrifice, and the indomitable spirit that defines the warrior ethos. Each episode blends battle-tested leadership lessons from historic and modern conflicts with raw, unfiltered conversations from the Tavern itself — where newly minted Marines celebrate their first meal after the Crucible, seasoned veterans share sea stories, and guests from all walks of life reflect on what it truly means to serve something greater than oneself. Listeners can expect: Conversations that connect history to humanity — from Belleau Wood to Baghdad, Normandy to Fallujah. Leadership insights drawn from both battlefield decisions and boardroom challenges. Interviews with Marines, veterans, historians, entrepreneurs, and guests who embody resilience, brotherhood, and purpose. Stories from the Tavern floor — where the laughter is loud, the lessons are real, and the camaraderie never fades. This isn’t just another podcast — it’s a living continuation of Marine Corps legacy, captured from the heart of where that legacy is reborn: The Belleau Wood Tavern, just outside the gates of Parris Island, South Carolina. Raise a glass. Pull up a stool. And join us as we carry the torch of the Marine Corps’ indomitable spirit into the next 250 years — one story, one Marine, one lesson at a time. Born In A Bar

AUDIO 🎙️ Episode 1: The Mosquito Bowl & The Birth of Belleau Wood Tavern In this inaugural episode of Tag and Talk, hosts Zachary Green and Roy DeCruz share their journey of launching the podcast and the inspiration behind the creation of Belleau Wood Tavern. They open up about their deep connection to Marine Corps history, the unbreakable bond of camaraderie among Marines, and how a seemingly simple wartime football game — the legendary Mosquito Bowl — became a symbol of brotherhood, sacrifice, and spirit. The Mosquito Bowl was a real football game played by U.S. Marines on Guadalcanal on Christmas Eve, 1944. The 4th and 29th Marine Regiments faced off in a gritty 0–0 tie that showcased both their competitiveness and their unity before deploying to Okinawa. Of the 65 Marines who took the field that day, 15 never returned, including both team captains — turning the game into an unforgettable testament to courage and camaraderie in the face of war. During their discussion of the Mosquito Bowl, Zach and Roy were joined by a few unexpected “guests” — friends and fellow Marines who raised their glasses (and a little rum) on the beach, honoring those who came before them. That moment of shared laughter and reflection reminded them why they built Belleau Wood Tavern: to create a place where past, present, and future Marines — and all who love them — can connect, share stories, and carry forward the Marine legacy for the next 250 years. 🔑 Takeaways The importance of planning and collaboration in starting any mission — even a podcast. Belleau Wood Tavern is more than a bar; it’s a home for Marines and a symbol of connection. Camaraderie is the heartbeat of the Marine Corps and the foundation of brotherhood. The Mosquito Bowl embodies the grit, humor, and legacy of Marines throughout history. World War II and Okinawa tested the Corps’ courage and defined its modern identity. Zach and Roy feel a deep ancestral connection to the Marines who came before them. Inspiration often arises from unexpected moments — like a drink of rum under the stars. Honoring Marine Corps history is a living mission, not a past memory. The podcast celebrates the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps. Future episodes will dive deeper into historic battles, leadership lessons, and untold Marine stories.
