The Rise of the Lost Boys: Why Young Men Are Becoming More Violent

Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of real criminal cases, including details that may be disturbing to some listeners. This week’s Side Bar dives into the 'Lost Boys' ABOUT : In recent years, experts have started warning about a troubling new trend often called the rise of the “lost boys” — a growing wave of younger and younger males becoming involved in violent crimes, especially gun-related homicides. While overall crime has dropped in many places, the rate of adolescent violence has surged, with some cities reporting dramatic spikes in teenage offenders. Researchers link this shift to a mix of pandemic-era trauma, lack of support systems, easy access to weapons, and a deep sense of social disconnection. It’s sparking a national conversation about how we’re failing young men, what’s fueling this crisis, and what it will take to keep the next generation from getting lost. _______________________________ WELCOME TO SIDE BAR — a spirited spinoff of Criminal Appeal, where host Dr. Casey Jordan and co-host Dr. Colleen Butler-Sweet take their conversations from the courtroom to the cocktail bar. Why Do Women Fall for Killers? The Science Behind Hybristophilia

Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of real criminal cases, including details that may be disturbing to some listeners. This week’s Side Bar dives into the Phenomenon of Hybristophilia ABOUT : Hybristophilia is a psychological phenomenon in which someone experiences attraction to another person who has committed violent or criminal acts. Often referred to as “Bonnie and Clyde Syndrome,” it can appear in mild forms—such as fascination with dangerous individuals—or more extreme forms where people actively pursue relationships with offenders, including those in prison. This attraction is usually tied to deeper psychological needs, like a desire to “save” or “fix” someone, a fascination with power, or the thrill of danger from a safe distance. While often sensationalized in true crime media, hybristophilia is complex and rooted in emotional, relational, and sometimes trauma-related dynamics. _______________________________ WELCOME TO SIDE BAR — a spirited spinoff of Criminal Appeal, where host Dr. Casey Jordan and co-host Dr. Colleen Butler-Sweet take their conversations from the courtroom to the cocktail bar. Menendez Brothers: Motive, Evidence & Controversy

Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of real criminal cases, including details that may be disturbing to some listeners. This week’s Side Bar dives into The Menendez brothers case ABOUT THE CASE: The Menendez brothers case involves the 1989 shotgun murders of wealthy Beverly Hills parents, José and Kitty Menendez, by their sons, Lyle and Erik. While the prosecution argued the motive was greed for the family's $14 million estate, the defense countered that the killings were an act of self-defense resulting from years of severe physical and sexual abuse by their father. After a high-profile first trial resulted in hung juries, the brothers were convicted of first-degree murder in a second trial in 1996 and sentenced to consecutive life terms. Recent resentencing, acknowledging they were youthful offenders, has made both brothers eligible for parole, reigniting debate over the role of child abuse in the case. _______________________________ WELCOME TO SIDE BAR — a spirited spinoff of Criminal Appeal, where host Dr. Casey Jordan and co-host Dr. Colleen Butler-Sweet take their conversations from the courtroom to the cocktail bar. Bryan Kohberger: Inside the Crime, the Investigation, and the Arrest

Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of real criminal cases, including details that may be disturbing to some listeners. This week’s Side Bar dives into the case of the Idaho Murderer, Bryan Kohberger. ABOUT THE CASE: Bryan Kohberger, a former criminology PhD student, pleaded guilty in July 2025 to the brutal 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students — Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. Investigators linked him to the crime through DNA evidence found on a knife sheath at the scene and a discarded Q-tip from his parents’ trash. Despite extensive digital forensics (cell tower pings, surveillance footage) and his attempts to clean his car and apartment, the motive for the killings remains unclear. As part of a plea deal, he avoided the death penalty and was sentenced to four consecutive life terms without parole, plus 10 years for burglary. _______________________________ WELCOME TO SIDE BAR — a spirited spinoff of Criminal Appeal, where host Dr. Casey Jordan and co-host Dr. Colleen Butler-Sweet take their conversations from the courtroom to the cocktail bar.
