A Lot More Nuanced

Drs. Lindsey Umstead & Brittany Wyche

What do you get when two mental health therapists with a mutual love of TV and musical theater become friends? This podcast. Six or so years after they decide to do a podcast. Join us as we rewatch one of our favorite shows of all time: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Created by Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna, this musical comedy-drama uses song and dance to follow Rebecca Bunch, after her move from NYC to West Covina, California for love. Across four seasons, this show explores themes surrounding relationships, mental health, identity, and acceptance. It’ll make you laugh. It’ll make you sing. It will probably make you cringe. And it will make you reflect on the complexity of the human condition (probably). Together, we talk about each episode of CXG from our lenses as therapists, educators, former theater kids, and girlies who have been on their own mental health journeys. Our main goal: highlight the ways in which this brilliant work of art captures the nuances of love, life, and self discovery. SO WEIRD, RIGHT?! Andrew is a Method Actor!

There aren't any rap battles in this episode, but there is a whole lot of laughter when Lindsey & Brittany have an incredible guest: Andrew! Andrew is Brittany's younger brother, and in return for him graciously recording with the pod on his anniversary, this episode is released on his birthday :) Andrew, Brittany, & Lindsey review CXG S1E13: Josh and I Go to Los Angeles! They talk narrative arcs, the function of music in musicals, costume design as part of storytelling, acceptance, and go on just a few tangents. Please note: there are some audio glitches at times in this one. Stick with us!
