Quick Fixes at Home That Give You Back Your Mental Space

Have you ever felt like you don't have time to manage the home and are feeling overwhelmed as a homemaker?  In this episode of Simply at the Table, Leisha and her daughters Belle and Kathryn talk about practical “quick fixes” that make home life feel lighter and more manageable. They focus on the small daily disciplines that protect mental energy, reduce clutter, and create more room for rest. The conversation is especially useful for anyone juggling work, school, homemaking, kids, or simply too many open tabs in their brain. Key topics   Short-term disciplines that support long-term sanity, especially in seasons of overwhelm. How small actions like making the bed, putting clothes away, and clearing one item immediately can prevent mental clutter later. In a season of feeling stretched thin, tiny systems are especially valuable. “Future self” thinking - doing a task now so the next version of yourself has less stress and fewer open loops. Resetting shared spaces so they do not become dumping grounds. The value of predictable rhythms, such as tidying toys before lunch and before nap time, so the house is ready for the next part of the day. Momentum-based productivity - once you start a task, the next 10 minutes often turn into 30 because the motion carries you forward. Quick household resets to habit stacking, using transit time or natural transitions to switch laundry, clean out the fridge, or reset a room. A morning routine of water, coffee, Bible reading, and writing down the day’s game plan helps avoid repeatedly reassessing what to do next. Reframing homemaking as an act of love - cleaning and resetting spaces. Timestamps 00:00 - Welcome to Simply at the Table and the heart behind the show 01:26 - Today’s topic: quick fixes in the home and why they matter 06:09 - Catherine’s transition from a stretched job into nannying 12:52 - Catherine’s overwhelm and the need for small stabilizing habits 15:17 - Why short term disciplines support long term sanity 18:06 - Future self thinking and why tiny tasks save mental energy 19:31 - Neutralizing chaos in the kitchen and other high traffic spaces 21:55 - Teaching kids to tidy toys and create a rhythm of responsibility 24:21 - Noticing how unfinished tasks affect your mood all day 25:47 - Momentum, snowballing, and why 10 minutes becomes 30 27:11 - Setting timers and using focused sprints to get more done 30:33 - Habit stacking and using transition moments for chores 32:30 - Why avoiding a task costs more energy than doing it 34:51 - The problem with snoozing and postponing real rest 36:35 - The biggest quick fix starts with settling yourself first 38:17 - Morning routines, planners, and a whiteboard to reduce decision fatigue 40:09 - Strategic breaks that help you stay regulated and productive 42:07 - Clearing the small rocks so the big rocks can fit 45:07 - Doing household work because someone you love will benefit 47:01 - Don’t cheat your rest - finish what needs doing so you can truly rest   To learn more or connect with us, visit our website: www.simplyatthetable.com   Visit Simply at the Table's Substack: The Simple Life for more in-depth articles on homemaking and family life.    For sourdough recipes, preserving, and from-scratch recipes: www.LockremHomestead.com    Toups & Co.
