Anton Taylor on the Bishops Pride Flag & Toxic Masculinity | Politically Aweh

A pride flag went up at Bishops boys' high school for two whole days during Pride Month, and some of the school's old boys had a full meltdown about it. But here's the thing, they don't all speak for the school. Anton Taylor, another Bishops old boy, took one look at the ooms trying to yank it down and said "absolutely not." Actor, comedian and friend of the show, Anton joins KG for a frank, unfiltered conversation about comedy, masculinity, the culture of boys' schools, and why standing up for the person with the least power in the room is the whole point. Real strength isn't kicking down at the people below you, it's the opposite. You can love rugby and the gym and still not be a bully about it. We get into where toxic masculinity actually comes from, what these schools get right and badly wrong, how comedy fits into all of it, and what it means to be an old boy who wants better for the next lot. How Government Funded South Africa’s Gambling Addiction | Makashule Gana | Politically Aweh

Online gambling in South Africa did not grow. It exploded. And the man shouting loudest about it in Parliament also happens to be chairing the committee looking into the President. Host KG Mokgadi sits down with RISE Mzansi MP Makashule Gana, 26 years in politics, chairperson of the parliamentary committee investigating President Cyril Ramaphosa, and the most persistent voice in Parliament on gambling reform. On the committee he gives KG almost nothing, just that there are rules and they will be followed. On gambling he holds nothing back. He explains how online betting turned a weekend outing into a 24 hour casino that lives in your pocket, why provinces undercut each other on gambling tax while the social damage lands somewhere else entirely, and the uncomfortable timing between the explosion of online gambling and the payment of the Covid SRD grant. He also makes the case that sport survived losing tobacco money and will survive losing betting money too. Along the way: 20 years in the DA, why he left with no regrets, a software testing career he swears he could go back to, and six Comrades marathons that double as thinking time. Then KG makes him rank breakfast cereals. The chairperson holds the line. The Two Reasons the DA Is in Trouble in Cape Town | Tara Roos on The Politically Aweh Podcast

KG sits down with political analyst and author Tara Roos, and honestly, buckle up. She reckons the DA is going to lose its majority in Cape Town, a take that got her cyberattacked,  prompting her to open a case with SAPS. No regrets though. They cover why Cyril's probably safe from impeachment, why MK still can't act like the real opposition, why the anger around xenophobia is pointed in the wrong direction, and why she has zero patience for South Africans who skip voting. She also opens up about what it costs to be a young woman working in politics.. Her book, Where To From Here, is out now: https://books.google.co.za/books/about/Where_to_From_Here.html?id=FpHZEQAAQBAJ&redir_esc=y This podcast is a companion series to our YouTube comedy explainer videos about South African and international current affairs. 1976 Youth Leader Seth Mazibuko: I Started a Revolution to Skip Exams | Politically Aweh

In 1976, students marched peacefully for their right to learn. Yet, they were met with bullets. Seth Mazibuko was one of the youngest leaders that day. He calls it the battle of the bullet versus the book. A generation that risked everything for an education. But Seth isn't only looking back. He draws a line from Soweto to #FeesMustFall, to the young South Africans facing record unemployment right now. Courage. Sacrifice. Betrayal. Accountability. And one challenge for this generation: don't just participate in the system. Lead it. Is Brett Herron the DA's Biggest Hater? | Politically Aweh Podcast

Brett Herron is not your typical politician. As a former city of Cape Town Mayco member and a DA insider for years, he was in the room where decisions were made, and he watched closely how the party operated, who really had influence, and what happened when you pushed back. He pushed back and suddenly the exit signs became very visible.  Now as Secretary General of the Good Party, Brett joins KG Mokgadi on Politically Aweh to unpack all of it. The N2 wall and what it's really there for. How party donors quietly shape housing policy in Cape Town. Helen Zille's track record versus her current mayoral ambitions. Brett doesn't do diplomatic. He names names, pulls receipts, and makes the case that a city being "well run" means nothing if nothing is actually changing for the people who live there. This is the conversation that happens after the press conference ends. This podcast is a companion series to our YouTube comedy explainer videos about South African and international current affairs. The Man Who Smuggled Drugs To Save Lives Has A New Fight | Mark Heywood | Politically Aweh Podcast

Mark Heywood once smuggled drugs into South Africa to break pharmaceutical patents and force the government's hand on HIV treatment. It worked. Six million people are now on ARVs. Now he's picked a new fight,  and this time, the enemy is an empty plate. KG sits down with Mark to unpack why a country with a food surplus has 20 million hungry people, why hunger shows up at the scene of every domestic violence case, and whether organised people power can still actually change things. Mark doesn't do diplomatic. He names the companies, calls out the government, and makes the argument that hunger in South Africa isn't a tragedy, it's a decision. This one will make you angry. In the best way. This podcast is a companion series to our YouTube comedy explainer videos about South African and international current affairs.
