A Product of Our Time

A Product of Our Time Podcast

What is nostalgia, and why does it seem that every current social media trend evokes it? We offer you a reading of the concepts that share the core of our day-to-day, i.e., love, childhood, home, nature, identity (and more!) through the lens of nostalgia. First and foremost though, we’re two friends having a conversation about a topic that resonates with us deeply, so please tune in to our conversations every Thursday. Marina & Steph

    Historic Nostalgia

What is historic nostalgia, and can it be about connecting with people of the past? Marina and Steph delve into social history, exploring it from the perspectives of art, literature, theatre and place. Since we discuss history in this episode, we will mention a few places, names, and sources.  If you wish to delve deeper after hearing our remarks, here’s your reading list: The article Steph mentions is from Michel de Certeau’s book ‘The Practice of Everyday Life’ (First published in English in 1988).  The painting Marina brought up is ‘Unequal Marriage’ (1892) by Vasili Pukirev, and there’s a wonderful article by Rhiannon Piper delving into some details. The link is on Linktree via our bio.  Speaking of nostalgia studies, mentioned for the second time on this pod is Dr Christine Batcho. There’s a video where she delves into the psychological purpose of nostalgia, which is also attached via Linktree in case you want to give it a listen. Books mentioned by Marina include Eric Hobsbawm’s ‘On Nationalism’, Benedict Anderson’s ‘Imagined Communities’, and Edward Said’s ‘Culture and Imperialism’.  Place mentions included the People’s Story Museum (@museumsgalleriesedinburgh) and Culloden Battlefield (@cullodenbattlefield) Steph mentions a play called ’The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil’, and there’s a link to a short video from its 2020 tour attached through the Linktree as well.  Access links via our Linktree: https://linktr.ee/product.of.our.time
