In-Laws & Outlaws: My Son Married His Father

My oldest son Max has a theory about his marriage. He says he married his father. Not someone like his father. His father. And after watching my husband and daughter-in-law Emma go at it over everything from politics to grocery store chicken salad, I think he might have a point. So I invited them both onto the podcast. Emma is back for Season 2, and this time she’s going head-to-head with Mr. B. Two big personalities, two very strong opinions, and two people who seem to genuinely enjoy pushing each other’s buttons. But we’re talking about more than their mutual love of a good argument. When you marry someone, you inherit an entire family. Their traditions, their expectations, their personalities, and in our case, approximately nine different family group chats. Emma grew up in a very different household than the one Mr B and I created. Different cultural influences, different ways of communicating, and different ideas about how involved family members should be in each other’s lives. And as much as she’s had to adjust to us, we’ve had to adjust to her. We talk about first impressions, family boundaries, the fine line between challenging someone and deliberately provoking them, and what happens when your adult children start building families of their own. And then we put Max’s theory to the test with a round of Who’s More Likely To? Turns out, Pete and Emma agree on a few things. Mostly that the other person is the problem. But underneath all that sparring is a relationship built on genuine affection, mutual respect, and a willingness to learn from each other. Because when our kids get married, we’re not just adding another person to the family. The family itself changes. And just because we built it doesn’t mean we still get to decide how it works. What we get into • Why Max insists he married his father • Pete’s expectations of becoming a father-in-law to three very different women • Emma’s first impressions of Pete and our family • Different generations, cultural backgrounds and communication styles • What happens when two opinionated people refuse to back down • The difference between having an honest conversation and pushing someone’s buttons • Why our family needs approximately nine group chats • Joining someone else’s family while creating one of your own • Holidays, family traditions and learning to share the calendar • Why parents need to make room for their adult children’s choices • The Who’s More Likely To? showdown between Pete and Emma • What Pete and Emma genuinely admire about each other • Why loving someone doesn’t mean you have to agree with them Chapters 00:00 My son married his father 02:04 Three sons, three daughters-in-law 03:34 Does Mr. B have a filter? 04:41 Why Max thinks Emma married his dad 09:27 Emma joins the conversation 09:45 “Don’t disrespect me like that!” 11:25 First impressions of the in-laws 14:01 Different generations, different backgrounds 15:56 When Pete and Emma almost had a blowout 18:37 You marry one person and inherit a family 19:16 Nine family group chats. All Those Boundaries, But Still on Our Family Mobile Plan

For the first episode of Season 2, I figured I should start with someone who was there for all ofit. My husband, Pete. We’ve been married 36 years, raised three boys, paid three college tuitions, survived threeweddings, and have now reached the point where the people we raised are grown adults, building families of their own and explaining the new rules to us. So we compared notes. Did we actually have a parenting philosophy? Were we the same parents to all three boys? Whowas stricter? Who worried more? And how much of what we did was intentional versus making itup as we went? We also talk about the things that mattered in our house. Family dinners. Holidays. Brotherssharing rooms. Knowing what was non-negotiable and knowing when to let things go.And then there’s the part nobody really prepares you for. Your kids grow up. They get married. They become parents. They do some things exactly the way you did themand other things very differently. Suddenly, you’re the one learning how to respect boundaries, wait to be asked for advice, and occasionally just keep your mouth shut. Apparently parenting doesn’t end when your kids grow up. You just lose management privileges. And yet, somehow, they’re still on the family mobile plan. What we get into Whether we had a parenting philosophy or mostly winged it Why three boys required three slightly different versions of us Family dinners and why I still think they mattered The unexpected upside of making brothers share a room Discipline, freedom and the things we’d probably do differently now What our kids are teaching us about parenting Becoming grandparents without forgetting who the actual parents are Family traditions, holidays and keeping everyone connected as the family grows The mistakes we made and the things we still think we got right What success looks like now that our kids are adults Chapters 00:00 Pete finally gets his turn02:19 Did we actually know what we were doing?04:55 Three boys, three different kids06:28 Things we did that probably wouldn’t fly today08:29 What we wish we knew then10:40 When your kids start teaching you about parenting13:43 Making brothers share a room16:38 Why family dinner mattered18:57 Discipline, humor and picking your battles20:15 The hard part: keeping your mouth shut23:22 Becoming the grandparents29:43 The things we brought with us from our own childhoods32:51 What we want the next chapter to look like
