Summer Has Completely Thrown Us Off!

Summer has thrown the routine out the window… and now you feel like you're barely keeping your head above water. In this week’s episode, we hear from a parent juggling multiple children with completely different needs and wondering how to get everyone “back on track” now that school is out. We unpack why summer can feel so dysregulating for the whole family. During the school year, so much of your day is already structured for you. Wake-up times, school drop-offs, meals, activities, and bedtimes naturally create a rhythm. Then summer arrives and suddenly, it can feel like you're responsible for recreating an entire schedule from scratch… while still working, parenting, and managing everything else. And when you have multiple children? The pressure to meet everyone's needs at the same time can make it feel even more impossible. One child wants movement. Another needs quiet. One is desperate to get out of the house while another would happily stay home all day. We talk about why “balance” doesn't necessarily mean meeting every child's needs equally in every moment and why it may be more helpful to zoom out and look at the week as a whole. Instead of trying to recreate the school day at home, we talk about building anchors into your family's summer. In this episode, you'll learn: - How to create simple “anchors” without overscheduling your summer - How to support children with different needs without trying to meet everything at once - Why looking at balance across the week can take pressure off individual days - Why your summer routine should include things you actually enjoy too     If you are looking for support, get in touch and share your questions and concerns at: meltdownabroad@gmail.com Find us on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube! Why Does My Child Save Their Meltdowns for Me?

Your toddler holds it together all day at daycare… so why do they completely fall apart the moment they get home? In this week’s episode, we hear from a parent who is beginning to dread the evenings. Her toddler is reportedly perfectly fine at daycare, but once they get home, the screaming and meltdowns begin and the whole evening can feel consumed by it. We unpack why being “fine” at daycare doesn't always mean your child has had an easy day. Sometimes children are having so much fun that they don't notice their hunger, tiredness, or overstimulation until their bodies begin to slow down. Other children may be working incredibly hard to follow routines, manage expectations, and hold themselves together and home becomes the place where they finally release everything they've been carrying. We also explore why going straight from a long, structured daycare day into the demands of home can be harder than we realize. Shoes need to come off. Dinner needs to be made. Teeth need to be brushed. Pajamas need to go on. Meanwhile, parents are managing their own evening transition and your toddler may still need help getting their body back to a calmer state before they're ready for more demands. The meltdown may not be proof that the day went badly. It may be a clue that your child has reached the end of what their body can manage and needs your help transitioning into the next part of their day. In this episode, you'll learn: - The difference between an overstimulating day and holding it together all day - Why the daycare/school-to-home transition may be the missing piece - How snacks, movement, quiet activities, and connection can support regulation - Why predictable after-school routines and visuals can help toddlers feel more in control     If you are looking for support, get in touch and share your questions and concerns at: meltdownabroad@gmail.com Find us on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube! We're Moving Across the Country and I'm Overwhelmed

Moving with kids is overwhelming enough… but what happens when you’re trying to choose a home, a school, and figure out your own career at the same time? In this week’s episode, we hear from a mom preparing for an urgent cross-country move with a preschooler and kindergartner. Her husband has a new job, the family is under financial strain, she needs to think about finding work herself, and they’ll be arriving three months into the school year. Her biggest question: Where do I even start? We explore why your family's daily life matters just as much as finding the “best” school. A great school with an exhausting commute may not feel so great when your child is tired, your partner gets home late, and the entire family has less capacity at the end of the day. Where you live shapes school options, childcare logistics, job possibilities, and how much time your family actually has together. We also talk about what overwhelm does to our ability to plan. When every task feels urgent, it's easy to spend every day chipping away at everything without feeling like you've accomplished anything. Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is decide what needs your attention now, what can wait, and what someone else can help you carry. This episode is for the parent staring at a massive moving checklist thinking, “I genuinely don't know what to do first.” You don't need to build your entire new life today. Start with the decisions that create the foundation for the next ones—and build from there. In this episode, you'll learn: - Why you don't need to solve every moving task at once - How delegating research and using AI can reduce some of the mental load - How involving your children in the moving process can make it feel less like one giant stressful task - Why supporting your own capacity matters when helping young children through a big transition     If you are looking for support, get in touch and share your questions and concerns at: meltdownabroad@gmail.com Find us on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube! My 5 Year Old Is Out of Control!

Could the timing of your consequence be the reason it’s not changing the behaviour? In this week’s episode, we respond to a message from a mom of a 5-year-old who is being sent home from daycare almost every day for hitting, throwing, and destroying the classroom—and despite trying consequences, rewards, and taking away privileges, nothing seems to be working. We unpack what might really be happening when a child’s behavior seems explosive at school. Is the environment too overwhelming? Is there a mismatch between what the child needs and what the setting is asking of them? Are there regulation, communication, or sensory needs underneath the behavior that haven’t been identified yet? This episode explores why children often “act out” when they don’t yet have the skills to communicate distress, tolerate frustration, or manage a dysregulated body and why traditional rewards and consequences often fall flat when the real issue is a missing skill, not a lack of motivation. This is a compassionate conversation for parents who are exhausted, embarrassed, worried, or feeling completely stuck. In this episode, you’ll learn: - Why rewards and consequences often don’t work when a child is missing regulation or communication skills - How to identify patterns in the environment that may be overwhelming your child - Why collaboration between home and school matters so much - What forceful behaviors can sometimes tell us from a sensory perspective   If you are looking for support, get in touch and share your questions and concerns at: meltdownabroad@gmail.com Find us on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube! Help, My Child Won't Stop Chewing on Everything!

In this week’s episode, we answer a question from a parent whose child is constantly searching for something else to chew on. Is it anxiety? Is it a bad habit? Or is it actually your child’s nervous system trying to communicate something important? We unpack why chewing is often much more than an oral habit—it can be a powerful clue that a child is seeking sensory input to help their body feel calm, focused, or organized. Rather than simply trying to stop the behavior, we explore how understanding why it's happening can completely change the way you respond. We also discuss why replacing one chewing item with another doesn't always solve the problem, how to identify whether the behavior is driven by anxiety or sensory seeking, and why many children need their sensory needs met in a variety of ways. Whether your child chews clothing, pencils, toys, necklaces, or anything they can get their hands on, we offers a compassionate framework for understanding what's really happening beneath the behavior. This episode is a reminder that behaviors are often communication. When we understand what a child's body is asking for, we can move beyond simply stopping the behavior and start giving them the tools they need to regulate themselves. In this episode, you'll learn: - How to tell whether your child's chewing is sensory seeking or anxiety-related - Why routines before and after challenging activities can make a difference - How to build a sensory toolbox that grows with your child - Practical ways to support regulation at home     If you are looking for support, get in touch and share your questions and concerns at: meltdownabroad@gmail.com Find us on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube! I’m an Overstimulated Mom and Every Sound Makes Me Panic!

Feeling touched out, overstimulated, and like every sound is making you want to crawl out of your skin? You're not alone. In this week's episode, we answer a question from a single mom who is doing it all on her own: "My child won't nap, I'm constantly overstimulated, and every sound feels like it's pushing me toward panic. What can I do?" This conversation is an honest look at what happens when parenting feels relentless. We talk about the reality that sometimes the issue isn't that you're doing anything wrong, it's that your nervous system has been carrying too much for too long. When you're parenting without breaks, running on little sleep, and constantly responding to noise, needs, and demands, it's understandable that your body starts reacting as if everything is an emergency. One of the most important themes in this episode is that regulation isn't just something children need, parents need it too. We talk about how sleep deprivation, constant caregiving, loss of personal identity, and the absence of support can all contribute to feelings of overwhelm, and why finding even small opportunities to reconnect with yourself matters. Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that feeling overstimulated does not mean you're failing as a parent. Sometimes it's simply a sign that your nervous system needs care, support, and a chance to recover. In this episode, you'll learn: - Why certain sounds can feel unbearable when you're overwhelmed - Simple sensory strategies to calm an overloaded nervous system - Ways to create calmer moments without adding more work to your day - How to recognize when you're operating in survival mode and what to do about it     If you are looking for support, get in touch and share your questions and concerns at: meltdownabroad@gmail.com Find us on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube!
