Your Team Doesn’t Need More Effort—It Needs Better Alignment | Working Genius with Ben Clarke

Have you ever looked around at your team and thought, “We have great people, we believe in what we’re building… so why does everything still feel so hard?” That question is personal for me. As my husband and I grew Sign Island, we had smart people, a committed team and no shortage of effort. Everyone was working hard—but we could still feel tension inside the business that we didn’t quite know how to name. The answer wasn’t another tool, another meeting or simply asking everyone to work harder. We needed better alignment. In this episode of the Dope Living Podcast, I sit down with strategic advisor and executive coach Ben Clarke to explore the Six Types of Working Genius—a model developed by Patrick Lencioni and The Table Group that helps us understand which parts of work naturally energize us, which parts we can do but find draining, and which parts may leave us completely frustrated. Ben walks us through the six geniuses—Wonder, Invention, Discernment, Galvanizing, Enablement and Tenacity—and explains how every project moves through these different stages. We also get very honest about what happened when we mapped the Sign Island team. We discovered where we were naturally strong, where important gaps existed and why certain conversations, decisions and responsibilities felt harder than they should have. That insight has completely changed how we think about hiring, delegating and building our team. In this conversation, we discuss: • Why talented and hardworking teams still underperform• The difference between a team and a group of people doing separate jobs• How to recognize your Working Geniuses, Competencies and Frustrations• Why founders often hire people who think exactly like them• What happens when important strengths are missing from a team• How Working Genius can support co-founders, couples and family businesses• What we learned from applying the model at Sign Island• A simple 30-day experiment you can try with your own team• Why knowing your weaknesses can make you a stronger leader My biggest takeaway from this conversation is that scaling is not only about effort, systems or headcount. It is also about designing work so that the right people are contributing at the right stage of the process. You do not have to carry every part of the work to be essential to the outcome. Your genius is not an accident. It is an asset. Watch the full conversation and let me know in the comments: which part of the work makes you feel most alive—and which part always feels like pushing a boulder uphill? React vs. Respond: How Great Leaders Stay Calm Under Fire

In this episode of the Dope Living Podcast, Janay sits down with mindfulness and performance coach Melo Calarco to unpack what actually happens to us under pressure — and how the best leaders learn to pause instead of snap. Drawing on three decades of coaching and a life spent cycling and trekking more than 30,000km across five continents, Melo breaks down the science of our fight-or-flight wiring, why we keep it switched on far too often, and how chronic stress quietly tips into burnout. He and Janee get into the real difference between stress and burnout, the self-awareness it takes to catch it early, and the simple breathing and mindfulness techniques you can use the moment things heat up. The throughline: when you understand your purpose and give yourself permission to pause, you stop reacting to your life and start responding to it. If you lead a team, carry a heavy load, or just feel like you're running on empty, this one's for you. How to Become Unforgettable in a Noisy Digital World

In this episode, we dive deep into the real foundations of modern personal branding and what it actually takes to grow with clarity and consistency in 2026 and beyond. Maddie James shares powerful insights on how identity shapes everything you create online — often more than mindset alone. We explore why consistency isn’t about motivation, but about systems, self-trust, and community support that keep you aligned even when inspiration fades. We also break down how today’s social media algorithms really work — and why attention and retention matter far more than likes or aesthetics. From the “fragmentation loop” that keeps creators stuck, to the idea of “everyday magic” as a personal system for sustainable visibility, this conversation reframes how you think about growth entirely. Key themes we explore:• Personal branding as a long-term career strategy• Identity vs. mindset in content creation• Why consistency is system-driven, not emotion-driven• The role of community in sustainable success• How the algorithm rewards attention and retention• Building trust through clarity and repetition• “Everyday magic” as a framework for aligned growth Guest: Mattie James If you enjoy conversations that blend strategy, psychology, and real-world application for creators and entrepreneurs, this one will resonate with you.
