    1. The Mystery of El Dorado

El Dorado: The Lost City of Gold | Mythic Albion – The Americas Deep in the vast, untamed jungles of South America lies one of history's most enduring mysteries: El Dorado, the legendary Lost City of Gold. But was El Dorado ever a city at all? Or did the legend begin with a single man, covered from head to toe in gold dust, sailing onto a sacred lake to perform an ancient ritual? In this episode of Mythic Albion: The Americas, we journey back to the age of the Spanish Conquistadors, when rumours of unimaginable wealth drew explorers into the mountains, rivers and impenetrable rainforests of South America. From the golden ceremonies of the Muisca people at Lake Guatavita to the perilous expeditions of Gonzalo Pizarro and Francisco de Orellana, we follow the men who risked everything in pursuit of a dream. As Orellana's expedition descends into the immense Amazon river system, the search for gold becomes a desperate struggle for survival. Hunger, disease and exhaustion haunt the men, while the jungle itself seems to conceal something far stranger than they could have imagined. We explore the eerie folklore of the Amazon, including tales of mysterious river spirits and the terrifying Mapinguari, a creature said to lurk beneath the forest canopy. We also follow the legend as it grows, drawing adventurers such as Sir Walter Raleigh into the search for the fabled golden kingdom of Manoa. Their expeditions bring suffering, obsession and death, yet the promise of El Dorado refuses to disappear. But modern discoveries have begun to reveal a different story. Using advanced LiDAR technology, archaeologists have uncovered evidence of ancient settlements, roads and sophisticated societies hidden beneath the Amazon's dense vegetation. Although no legendary city made entirely of gold has been found, these discoveries challenge the old image of the rainforest as an untouched wilderness. At the heart of the mystery lies the Muisca tradition that may have inspired it all: a sacred ritual transformed, through rumour, ambition and greed, into a legend that consumed generations of explorers. Was El Dorado merely a myth born from the hunger for gold, or does the truth behind the legend still lie hidden beneath the jungle? Join Mythic Albion as we uncover the history, folklore and enduring mystery of the Lost City of Gold. And next time, we travel to Mexico to explore the Day of the Dead—a remarkable tradition of memory, family and the enduring connection between the living and those who have passed beyond. Walk wisely, and beware the promise of something bright within the depths of something dark. Episode 20 – The Origins of Albion Part 2: Brutus of Troy Long before England had kings, the ancient island of Albion was said to be ruled by giants. But according to medieval legend, a new age was about to begin. In Episode 20 Part 2 of Mythic Albion, we continue our journey into the legendary origins of Britain with the extraordinary story of Brutus of Troy—the man destined to become the founder of Britain and the first king of the Britons. From before his birth, Brutus is surrounded by prophecy. We follow his remarkable lineage and the tragic events that lead to his exile from his homeland. His journey eventually takes him to Greece, where he encounters thousands of Trojan descendants living as slaves. Determined to free them, Brutus gathers an army and begins the quest that will ultimately lead him towards the mysterious island foretold by destiny. Along the way, Brutus discovers an ancient temple and encounters the goddess Diana, who reveals the fate that awaits him across the western seas. He also meets Corineus, the legendary warrior who will become one of his greatest allies. Their journey takes them across the ancient world and into Gaul, where Brutus and his followers face new enemies before finally setting sail for the mysterious shores of Albion. But the island is not empty. Albion is inhabited by a formidable race of giants—the descendants of the legendary Albina. Brutus and his Trojan followers must fight for their right to settle the island, culminating in a legendary confrontation with the giant champion Gogmagog. From prophecy and exile to slavery, ancient temples, giants and epic battles, this is the story of how Brutus of Troy supposedly arrived in Albion and began the legendary foundation of Britain. 20. The Origins of Albion Part 1: Albina

Long before Britain had kings, kingdoms, roads or even a name, medieval legend tells of a forgotten age when the northern world lay buried beneath ice. As the frozen landscape thawed, a great island emerged from the sea—an untouched wilderness waiting for its first inhabitants. In Part 1 of this Season Finale episode of Mythic Albion, we explore the remarkable medieval origin story of Albina, the legendary woman from whom Britain was once said to take its ancient name. Banished from Syria after plotting with her thirty-two sisters to murder their husbands, Albina is cast adrift upon the seas. After weeks of wandering, the sisters discover an uninhabited island, where Albina claims the land and names it Albion. But their story is only just beginning. As the sisters settle upon the island, they encounter a darker force. According to the legend, the Devil and his demonic followers descend upon Albion, seducing the women and fathering a race of mighty giants. Among their descendants is the fearsome Gogmagog, whose people become the first rulers of the island long before the arrival of Brutus of Troy and the age of men. Blending medieval mythology, creation legend and folklore, this episode explores one of Britain's oldest and most extraordinary origin stories—a tale of betrayal, exile, demons and giants that once sought to explain the very beginnings of Albion itself. 18. Britain's Haunted Roads

Please visit Richard Clement's website here: The History Alchemist Substack by Richard Clements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Britain's roads are ancient. Some follow Roman highways laid nearly two thousand years ago. Others trace forgotten paths worn into the landscape by countless generations of travellers. Yet according to folklore, not everyone who journeys these roads is among the living. In this episode of Mythic Albion, we venture onto Britain's most haunted highways, exploring the chilling legends that have haunted travellers for centuries. We begin with the eerie Corpse Roads, ancient funeral routes where ghostly processions and restless spirits were said to continue their final journey long after death. From there, we encounter the mysterious Hairy Hands of Dartmoor, an unseen force blamed for terrifying encounters on the lonely roads of the Moor. Our journey then leads to Blue Bell Hill in Kent, home to Britain's most famous phantom hitchhiker, before travelling further back into folklore with tales of spectral coaches and ghostly carriages racing through the darkness as omens of death and misfortune. Finally, we arrive at the crossroads — those liminal places where roads, worlds and destinies were believed to meet. Places associated with ghosts, witchcraft, restless spirits and even the Devil himself. From lonely country lanes and windswept moorland roads to phantom passengers and supernatural encounters, this episode explores why roads have occupied such a powerful place within Britain's folklore and imagination. Because every road tells a story. And some stories never reach their destination. 17. The Devil's Mark

For centuries, the Devil has stalked the folklore of Britain. Not merely as the ruler of Hell described in scripture, but as a wanderer of lonely roads, a tempter upon windswept hills, and a dark presence lurking in the shadows of the British landscape. In this episode of Mythic Albion, we explore some of Britain's most chilling devil legends and the strange places said to bear his mark. We begin with the infamous Devil's Footprints of 1855, when mysterious hoofprints appeared across the snow-covered countryside of Devon, sparking panic throughout Victorian England. From there, we uncover the tale of the Mowing Devil, a sinister figure said to have cut a farmer's field in a single night, and the legend of Piers Shonks, the dragon-slayer who outwitted the Devil himself. Our journey continues to the haunted heights of Chanctonbury Ring, where local folklore claims the Devil may be summoned beneath the moonlight, before visiting the mysterious Devil's Chair and the dramatic landscape of Devil's Dyke, whose very creation was blamed upon Satan's handiwork. Along the way, we discover how Christianity transformed ancient pagan sites into places of fear, how the Devil became woven into the geography of Britain, and why these stories have endured for centuries. From windswept hills and ancient earthworks to unexplained footprints in the snow, this is a journey into the dark heart of British folklore. Because in Britain, the Devil was never far away. 16. The Legends of the Seven Seas

Black sails on the horizon. Cannons thundering through the mist. The creak of timber beneath blood-soaked decks. In this episode of Mythic Albion, we sail into the violent and mythologised world of the pirates — the outlaws, privateers, rebels and monsters who haunted the seas during the Golden Age of Piracy. Far from the romantic tales of adventure, these were dangerous men shaped by war, empire and survival. Men who abandoned the laws of kings and nations to forge their own brutal kingdoms upon the ocean. We follow the lives and legends of some of history's most infamous pirates: Blackbeard — the smoke-shrouded Devil of the Atlantic Calico Jack and the legendary women who sailed beside him: Anne Bonny and Mary Read Bartholomew Roberts — the Gentleman Pirate who captured hundreds of ships And Edward Low — a man whose cruelty became infamous even among pirates themselves Together, their stories reveal a world of black flags, naval warfare, mutiny, greed and terror — where freedom and brutality walked hand in hand. But beyond the history lies something deeper. Because pirates endure not simply because they existed… But because they became myth. Symbols of rebellion. Of lawlessness. Of humanity untethered from civilisation itself. From storm-dark seas to the gallows awaiting them on shore, this is the story of the men and women who became the Devils of the Sea. Mythic Albion — where the old world is never as far away as it seems. 0:09 - Intro 2:21 - Blackbeard  8:32 - Calico Jack 13:49 - Edward Low 19:37 - Black Bart 25:42 - Conclusion With music by Luella Gren, Christoffer Moe Ditlevsen, Fredrik Ekstrom, Philip Ayers and Ruiqi Zhao,  Music and sound effects licensed via Epidemic Sound (www.epidemicsound.com).
