BRCA1 and Faith: Dawn Burns on Waiting for God’s Peace Before Surgery

What do you do when you test positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation and the first doctors you see push you toward surgery? In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Charleston author Dawn Burns shares how she waited seven years for God’s peace before making her decision. Dawn is the author of This is Charleston and the creator of The Nashville Mom and South of Sullivan. She sits down with Katie and Stephanie to talk about what happened after her mother’s breast cancer diagnosis revealed a family gene mutation: the six-month screenings, the suspicious MRI results, the wrestling with God, and the day peace finally came. If you or someone you love is facing a hard medical decision, Dawn offers a practical starting point: gather information, talk to women who have been through it, and pray. She also talks about the neighbors who surrounded her, why receiving help is harder than giving it, and why she’s still in the middle of reconstruction and honest about it. You’ll also hear how a fourth-grade invitation to church and one last-minute yes to a college beach project shaped her faith and her friendships, plus her encouragement to any woman who feels isolated: make the first move. This conversation is one woman’s story, not medical advice.
