    Yeren: China’s Red-Haired Wildman Legend

    In the forested mountains of Shennongjia in northwestern Hubei Province, witnesses have reported a tall, upright, hair-covered figure known as the Yeren, usually translated as wild man. Modern accounts describe reddish or dark hair, long arms, large footprints, unusual calls, and brief appearances near roads, ravines, forest edges, and mountain trails. One important modern report came in nineteen seventy-six, when published retellings described local forestry officials or workers seeing a reddish-brown upright creature near a road, though versions differ on witness count and details. That report helped trigger organized searches during China’s period of intense Yeren interest. But a living population would need food, breeding groups, DNA, carcasses, and repeatable traces. The central question remains: what have generations of witnesses been seeing in one of China’s most biologically important and visually deceptive forests? Its name is commonly linked to the Tagalog root tanggal, meaning to remove or separate, and many versions place it within the wider aswang tradition of vampire-like, shapeshifting, corpse-eating, and flesh-hunting beings. This episode follows the Manananggal through rural oral warning, Visayan associations including Capiz, colonial-era reinterpretation, twentieth-century folklore collections and horror media, and modern witness-like testimony.
