I Didn't Want to Get Involved: The Bystander Effect

Would you step in, or would you assume someone else already has? This week, one video sent me down a rabbit hole I just had to bring you into. 🐰 A family paddleboarding on a Florida river heard yelling in the distance, paddled toward it, and got a stranded teenager to safety. Their video went viral again in light of the ongoing Nolan Wells case, and it left me with a question: why did they stop when so many people probably wouldn’t? I'm telling you three true stories: A man who stood in freezing water for an hour while 75 people watched from the beach, a toddler in a busy market that eighteen people walked past, and the 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese, the case that gave the bystander effect its name. Then I'm breaking down the famous New York Times story that got her case wrong turning it into an urban lore, the psychology that turned out to be right though (diffusion of responsibility, pluralistic ignorance, and the weird math your brain does in a crowd), and the 5 Ds of bystander intervention, so you know how to step in safely when your gut says something is off. I'm also sharing two personal stories about why I don't fully rely on the “system”, including one I've only shared with a few people in my life. Listener note: this episode discusses violent crime, suicide, the exploitation of minors, and domestic violence. Take care of yourself, and skip this one if you need to. We can catch up next week. DM me your active bystander stories and your topic suggestions, and if you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, rate, and review wherever you're listening. Love ya! 😽

Are Algorithms Killing Our Voices? The Death of Regional Accents and Corporate "Blanding"

The Supreme Court is currently deciding the massive Trump v. Barbara birthright citizenship case, and not enough people are talking about it. A legendary painter passed away peacefully at 88, while a dissident Russian artist was assassinated in broad daylight after mocking Vladimir Putin. And the government's favorite warrant-free spying tool, FISA Section 702, officially expired, but the wiretaps are still running on complete autopilot. Just a totally chill, normal week, right? Once we survive the space weather blackouts from the sun throwing an absolute solar maximum temper tantrum, I dive deep into the hidden map of American accents! Everyone thank my mom for this suggestion! Have you ever wondered why you turn into a total vocal chameleon and accidentally mimic someone else's accent after talking to them for five minutes? I’m breaking down the exact psychology behind phonetic convergence, why traditional regional dialects are completely disappearing across younger generations, and my absolute hot take on the massive corporate "blanding" turning our physical world into a sterile, millennial-grey nightmare. It’s time for a full-scale linguistic rebellion. 🪧 Plop down on your davenport and let's get groovy again. Weee!
