    The Belt That Can Kill your Engine

    The Accessory drive belt may not look like a cooling-system component, but on many vehicles, it plays a critical role in keeping the engine alive. If that belt drives water pump, a broken or failed belt can stoop coolant circulation almost instantly-and the engine can go from running normally to catastrophic overheating in a very short time. So how long should you keep that belt. in service? Until it breaks? Until you hear it squealing? Until you can see cracks? I wouldn't recommend pushing it that far.👍😂 If your vehicle is one you plan on keeping for the long haul, preventative maintenance is your best insurance. A relatively inexpensive belt can be a whole lot cheaper than replacing an engine damaged by a severe overheat.     Cooling Fans: Are They On? What It Means When They're Not

    Are your cooling fans supposed to be running? And what does it mean when they aren't? As we continue our Cooling System Revival, today we take a close look at one of the most important parts of keeping your engine at the proper operating temperature -the cooling fan system. We'll explain what the cooling fans are, what it means when they're running, and what it means to you when they don't turn on when they're supposed to. We'll also look at how the fan system is controlled by the thermal switch and the ECM (Electronic Control Module) -the brainiac in the car-and why the fans may come on somewhere around 212-225F, depending on the vehicle and system design. And remember, proper coolant mixture matters too. The right antifreeze/water blend helps provide both the freeze protection and boil-over protection your cooling system needs. No need to become an electrical engineer today.     Your Heater Control Unit May Be the Reason You Have NO HEAT

    You've got a good thermostat, a good heater core,coolant is flowing, and yet.....NO HEAT! What gives? Todauy we'ree looking at the Heater Control Unit (HCU)- the commander that tells the heating system what you want it to do. And sometimes, that command has to travel to a component you may know as the hot water valve, but the manufacturer may call something completely different. Case in point: a Crown Victoria that had visited multiple shops on the Hamilton Mountain without anyone finding the reason it wouldn't make heat. The wiring diagram finally revealed the culprit hiding behind a very fancy name: thermal blower lockout. Yep. That was the hot water valve. Before winter catches you off guard, you want to know that the HCU can actually command that valve to open-and that the valve responds. Modern heating and A/C systems are increasingly computerized, which means the problem may not be where you thoink it is.     HEATER CORE: The Most Expensive Little Part in Your Car!

    It's called a heater core-but there's nothing "little" about the job of replacing one. As we continue our Cooling System Revival, we're getting right into the core of things: the heater core. What exactly is a heater core? What does it look like? Where is it hiding? How does it work? And why can something that looks like a tiny radiator turn into a major repair bill? The heater core is part of your vehicle's cooling system, using hot engine coolant to provide heat inside the passenger compartment. But when it becomes restricted with rust, sludge or deposits, you may lose heat - or lose coolant altogether. And here's the ugly part: getting to the heater core. On many vehicles' the heater box is buried deep behind the dashboard. The car may have been assembled around that heater box, meaning access can involve removing the seats, centre console, carpet, dashboard and a whole lot of hardware just to reach the part. I share the story of a Dodge Spirit that needed a heater core replacement. The job took nearly eight hours - I explain why I told the owner not to come looking over my shoulder while I was doing it. Some jobs require absolute focus! And if you think eight hours of labour sounds expensive, wait until you multiply that by today's shop rates. You might want to check your underwear drawer before you hear the final number.😂 We'll also talk about why attempting to flush a badly plugged heater core isn't always successful, and why sometimes replacement is the only real solution.
