Cold weather has a nasty habit of exposing neglected maintenance. The time to preapre is BEFORE the temperature drops, not when you're standing i na frozen parking lot wondering why your vehicle won't cooperate! Here's what's on the workbench today: 1) Do your wipers suck? If you can't see clearly, you can't drive safely. Check those bleades before winter weather turns your windshield into a visibility nightmare. 2) How are your fluids doing really? Coolant, oil and other vital fluids deserve attention before the cold asrrives. Winter will expose weaknesses you didn't know you had. 3) Does your vehicle have an external fuel filter? If it does, find out what your manufacturers maintenance schedule says. Don't assume every vehicle has a serviceable external filter. 4) What's in your washer -fluid jug? Minus 40℃? Don't gamble with a mixture that freezes when you need it most. Here at the workshop, we don't do halfway measures! 5) Have you protected your door seals? Silicone protection can help prevent frozen seals from sticking. A little preparation beats trying to pry open your vehicle after an overnight freeze!     Do Shocks Really Matter? The Key to Tire Contact, Stability & Control

    Shocks and Struts aren't there just for comfort-they have a critical job to do. In today's Suspension & Steering: One Nugget at a Time, Motormouth breaks down what shocks and struts actually do and why they're so important to vehicle stability and control. Whether your vehicle has MacPherson Struts, conventional shocks and coil springs, coil-over assemblies, or a combination of suspension designs, the principle is the same: the suspension has to control the movement of the vehicle while keeping the tires properly planted on the road. When shocks or struts are worn, the suspension can continue bouncing and oscillating instead of settling down. That can reduce tire contact, compromise braking and steering response, increase body movement, and make an emergency left-right maneuver much harder to control. It's not about making your ride feel softy or comfortable. It's about controlling the suspension so the tires can do their job. And when you suddenly have to avoid something in the road, that tire contact can be the difference between maintaining control and finding yourself in a sideways skid-and heading for the rhubarb. Today we look at the purpose of shicks and struts, how different suspension designs use them, and why they deserve to be part of your regular vehicle inspection and maintenance routine.     Time to beat the drum, friends🥁 Drum brakes may be simple in design, but they can get complicated when maintenance gets ignored. And yes- there are still plenty of vehicles on the road using rear drum brakes, either on their own or as part of a disc/drum braking system. NOTE: drum brakes require a manual adjustment performed by your auto service technician. Today we're talking about drum barake service, maintenance and repairs, including why rear drum brakes need proper adjustment and why your parking brake/emergency brake needs to be used regularly. One important lesson from the shop and the classroom: drum brakes don't magically maintain themselves. That technician still has an important job to do.
