20: When You Can't Run: Injury, Identity & The Race You're Still Chasing

What happens when running gets taken away? As we build towards races, our training becomes intertwined with our self-image. But what happens when our bodies tell us, “Not on my timeline!" Today, we welcome back our dear friend in the Wired To Run family, Troy, who shares his personal journey through several injuries and inspiring resilience on his road to his first world major. Laura and Troy dig into the frustration of being sidelined and the unexpected new plan. They discuss the challenges around missed workouts, watching everyone else keep training, constantly recalculating race-day expectations, and the fear that taking time off means losing progress or even losing part of your identity. They also explore the pressure runners put on themselves to push through pain, the emotional weight of changing a training plan, and why being sidelined can feel like a crushing loss. When running becomes part of who you are, an injury doesn’t just affect your body. It can shake your confidence, your routine, your goals, and your sense of where you belong as a runner. So what happens when the original plan no longer works? How do you adjust without feeling like you’ve given up? In Episode 18, Laura and Will were honored to have the opportunity to sit down with Jacqueline Kelly, founder of Kelly Performance and Wellness, to explore how mental training can strengthen physical performance. Jacqueline Kelly, MS, CMPC, NASM-CPT, NSCA CSCS, NSAC-TSAC, is a former NCAA basketball player, Registered Psychotherapist, Certified Mental Performance Consultant, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and Personal Trainer with more than 20 years of experience. Throughout her career, Jacqueline has worked with Big Ten football programs, professional golfers, soccer players, cyclists, executives, students, recreational athletes, and individuals seeking greater mental and physical well-being. In this episode, Jacqueline reveals how the way you speak to yourself, direct your focus, regulate your emotions, and prepare your mind can transform the way you train and perform. From quieting negative self-talk and managing race day anxiety to building confidence through visualization, she shares practical tools to help runners feel stronger when the miles and their minds get difficult. She also challenges the traditional idea of mental toughness by explaining what it means to become “Unfragile”  and not hiding your emotions or pushing through at any cost, but learning how to stay grounded, adapt, and come back stronger when life or running knocks you off course.
