Is September really the New Year?!

Transition seasons can be overwhelming, but they’re also an opportunity to reset, organize, and support one another with more intention. In this episode, Caise and Corinne talk about one of the hardest parts of the year for many families and first responders: transition season. From the back-to-school reset to shifting routines, they explore how to make the move from summer into fall feel a little less chaotic and a lot more manageable. They discuss why September can feel like a true “new year,” how kids and adults alike struggle with transitions, and why it helps to start preparing early instead of waiting until the last minute. They also dig into the financial side of back-to-school season, the emotional load families carry, and how shared planning can reduce stress. A major theme of the conversation is grace: for yourself, for your partner, and for your kids. Caise and Corinne share practical ideas like weekly household check-ins, sharing the mental load, building a fall bucket list, and gradually helping kids get back into school routines. ---------------------------------------- Key topics covered: Why back-to-school season feels like a real reset The emotional difficulty of transitions for kids and adults Preparing early for school routines, schedules, and supplies Managing the cost of back-to-school season Sharing the mental load in relationships and co-parenting Weekly “business meetings” for household logistics Giving kids more responsibility and autonomy Self-care and grounding strategies during seasonal change  Highlights: September as a “new year” mindset Why transitions are hardest for children How to divide chores, scheduling, and planning more fairly The value of checking in weekly as a team Teaching kids practical responsibility before the school year starts  Takeaways: Start transition conversations early. Keep expectations realistic and compassionate. Share responsibilities instead of carrying everything alone. Use regular check-ins to stay aligned. Help kids practice routines before the school year begins.   Transition seasons can be overwhelming, but they’re also an opportunity to reset, organize, and support one another with more intention. For over 10 years Corinne Santore has been treating first responders & teaching them how to accept and regulate their nervous system and process work traumas!  She demystifies trauma, 'little T's' and 'big T's' and the impact on the job trauma can have on a first responder's personal & work life if left unresolved. Bilateral stimulation from movement, beats and EMDR are just a few tools she explores.  A vulnerable and underserved population, she advocates for global awareness & tolerance to getting help and a world where EMDR, emotional processing and regulation tools are preventive and normative.  ---------------------------------------------- Resources: SpeakEasy First Responder Outpatient Therapy https://www.santoreandassociates.com/ IAFF Center of Excellence - Rehab & Treatment for Fire Fighters https://www.iaffrecoverycenter.com/ Bluecoats https://www.bluecoatsinc.org/ OAPFF – Ohio Association of Professional Firefighters https://oapff.org/  ------------------------------------------ Therapists' Corinne & Caise host this unique podcast focused exclusively on First Responder stories, challenges, needs and resources for the whole person and their families. "The 5 Love Languages”

Find out what you and your partner’s love languages are and how knowing this can improve your relationship. In this episode, Corinne Santore and Caise McHale dive into the practical application of Dr. Gary Chapman’s "Five Love Languages". They explore how these categories serve as a "basic premise" to help individuals become more effective and intentional in both showing and recognizing love within their relationships. The Five Love Languages DefinedActs of Service: Doing thoughtful, "extra" things that aren't just standard adult chores. Examples: Warming up scrubs in the dryer, filling the gas tank, or packing lunch. Gifts: It’s about the thought, not the price tag. Examples: Picking up a favorite candy bar (KitKat) at the store, a handwritten card, or wildflowers from the roadside. Words of Affirmation: Verbal expressions of appreciation, respect, and affection. Examples: "I don't know what I'd do without you" or "You look so good today." Physical Touch: Beyond sexual intimacy, this includes physical connection and "co-regulating" the nervous system. Examples: Holding hands, a peck on the lips, or rubbing a partner's back. Quality Time: Focused, undistracted attention rather than just "quantity" of time. Note: Watching TV together may not count if there is no interaction or connection.
