How Could a Crucified Man Be King? The Scandal of the Cross (John 19:17-27)

The cross is so familiar to us today that it's easy to forget just how shocking it was. To the Roman world, crucifixion was a humiliating death reserved for slaves and criminals. Yet above Jesus' head were the words: “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”In Part 1 of our study of the crucifixion, we walk through John 19:17-27 and unpack what actually happened at Golgotha, why the cross was so scandalous to both Jews and Romans, and how Jesus is crowned King through the very suffering meant to humiliate Him.We also explore the meaning behind “the place of the skull,” why Jesus was crucified between two criminals, the significance of His title being written in three languages, and the remarkable fulfillment of Psalm 22 as Roman soldiers cast lots for His clothing. Finally, we see Jesus caring for His mother even while hanging on the cross.📖 Scripture: John 19:17-27 (ESV)🎙️ Bible Bible Bible is a verse-by-verse podcast hosted by brothers Stephen and Ben Joffer. Why Did Jesus Wear a Crown of Thorns? It Wasn’t Just Mockery (John 19:1-16)

Why was Jesus given a crown of thorns? The Roman soldiers meant it as mockery—but within the larger story of Scripture, the thorns point all the way back to the curse in Genesis. In this episode of Bible Bible Bible, we walk through John 19:1-16 verse by verse as Jesus is flogged, crowned with thorns, presented before the crowd, and ultimately sentenced to crucifixion. We explore how Jesus takes the curse of sin upon Himself, why Pilate repeatedly declares Him innocent, and the deeper meaning behind the words, “Behold the man.” We also unpack why Pilate becomes afraid when he hears Jesus called the Son of God, what Jesus means when He says Pilate's authority was “given from above,” and the devastating significance of the chief priests declaring, “We have no king but Caesar.” Ultimately, John brings us face-to-face with the innocent King taking the punishment we deserved—and the forgiveness He offers even to those who rejected Him. 📖 Scripture: John 19:1-16 (ESV) 🎙️ Bible Bible Bible is a verse-by-verse podcast hosted by brothers Stephen and Ben Joffer.
