Ep. 48: Defying Expectations and the Gravity of Manako Kajii - "BUTTER"

Following up on the Japanese episode, I’m talking about Asako Yuzuki's Butter - a novel that became a massive hit and the Waterstones Book of the Year in the UK in 2024. While I was initially expecting a classic murder mystery inspired by a real-life case, the story dug much deeper into the fierce and tightly guarded worldview of the suspect, Manako Kajii. In this episode, I share my thoughts on the striking contrast between Kajii and the journalist Rika, who slowly gets swallowed up by Kajii' magnatic pull and lifestyle. We also explore the book's raw portrayal of the suffocating pressures placed on women in Japanese society, unrealistic beauty standards, and the complexities of female friendship. Did this book resonate globally because these struggles with misogyny and societal expectations are universal, or because of its specific glimpse into the toxicity of Japanese culture? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Thank you so much for listening. See you in the next episode, and happy reading.

Ep. 46: Fierce Determination to Protect One's True Self - "The Marriage Portrait"

"She will not permit him access..." On the heavy feeling of losing your own identity to become a part of someone else's. In this episode, I’m talking about The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell, a solid 4-star read that truly met my high expectations. From the very first chapter, we are thrown into the intense tension of Lucrezia knowing her husband is going to kill her. I dive into the beautiful descriptions, the complex and multi-layered character of Alfonso, and Lucrezia's fierce determination to protect her inner self despite her tragic fate. Thank you so much for listening. If you enjoyed our time together, please leave a comment in - I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Ep. 44: Falling for a Mysterious Book Cover and Discovering a Classic - "Dr. Smirno's Diary"

In this episode, I’m talking about Dr. Smirno's Diary by Samuel Auguste Duse. I picked this up at a bookstore purely because it was hidden under a solid black cover that said, "You should read this without knowing the title." I completely fell for the marketing! Surprisingly, it turned out to be a pioneering Swedish mystery published over a hundred years ago, back in 1917. The book was out of print for a long time but is legendary in mystery lovers in Japan. I’m sharing my honest thoughts on reading this classic completely blind and the fun of unexpected reading encounters. Thank you so much for listening! P.S. A quick correction: I totally misspelled the eccentric detective's name in this episode! It's actually Leo Carring, not Kalling. Please excuse my mix-up!

Ep. 42: On High Expectations and Self-Created Letdowns - "The Blue Hour"

I know I keep saying I'm not a mystery book kind of person, but here we are with another one... In this episode, I share my honest thoughts on The Blue Hour　by Paula Hawkins. Having read The Girl on the Train and Into the Water, I went in with high expectations for a mind-blowing, spine-chilling twist. But to be completely honest, the ending left me feeling a little disappointed and unfinished. I dive into how our past reading experiences with an author can build up these "self-created letdowns", and what happens when an ending doesn't quite tie up the way we hoped. The previous episode is in Japanese so check it out if you haven't!

今回は、『The Girl on the Train』で知られるポーラ・ホーキンズさんの、『The Blue Hour』について。
