    Best Medicine Season 2 Episode 4 Reaction: No Place Like Om – Tugged at Our Hearts

    Martin Best (Josh Charles) has one goal this weekend: get out of Port Wenn and meet Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe) in Boston. A busted windshield, a missed bus, three patients behaving very strangely after a meditation retreat... Does he make it? You’ll have to watch. This week Mel, Gabriela, and Doug join me for Best Medicine Season 2, Episode 4, “No Place Like Om.” The gang agreed this one runs more on heart than comedy. (Did it try to cram in one storyline too many? I have opinions.)     Best Medicine S2E3 Reaction Crate Expectations: Karaoke Night, the Crate Race & Louisa’s Date

    Mel, Carol, and Gabriela join Chesla to dig into Best Medicine Season 2, Episode 3, “Crate Expectations.” It’s karaoke night in Port Wenn! Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe) grabs the mic, and the gang splits on whether her singing is comedy gold or something to watch through your fingers. Sheriff Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra) throws himself into it, but is the town’s teasing of Eden a welcome or a warning? Martin Best (Josh Charles) has her back, though nobody’s sold on how he says “girlfriend.” And Greg Garrison (Stephen Spinella) and George Brady (Jason Veasey) prove once again that they hold the town together. When Lorenzo (Malachi Nimmons) keeps fainting, Chesla suspects the “Mary Hart effect,” but the real cause surprised everyone. Meanwhile, a positive pregnancy test among the male sea urchin workers, including Blake (Brandon Gilpin), sets off a testicular cancer hunt. Is Glendon rehabilitated, or still the bully who won’t let Martin forget his childhood crate race? The group digs into their history. Aunt Sarah Best (Annie Potts) coaches Peter Cronk (Ben Lewis Doherty), who then coaches Martin. Chesla (nerd!) wonders if that makes it transitive coaching, while Gabriela sees Peter as Sarah’s similar-to-Martin second chance. So why did Peter run right past Martin’s open arms? There’s also a family of fibbers, some fixed crates, and “Marty One Crate.” Louisa Gavin (Abigail Spencer) and Mark both have dates out of town. IVF becomes a first-date icebreaker, and “now you made me be mean” divides the group, with Gabriela as Louisa’s number one defender. Then there’s that hug after the crate race. Elaine Denton (Cree) gets to show her character’s depth plus gives Al Large (Carter Shimp) a much-needed talking-to about Bert Large (John DiMaggio). Plus: guest actors celebrating their TV debuts, how well the writers capture Gen Z humor, Chesla feels good about a GOAT coincidence, and predictions about whether Martin makes it to Boston.     Best Medicine S2E2: "Breakin' In Is Hard to Do" Did Eden set up the prank?

    Best Medicine Season 2, Episode 2, "Breakin' In Is Hard to Do": the Port Wenn pharmacy gets robbed, Louisa's time-sensitive fertility medication is among the missing items, and the town gives Martin Best (Josh Charles) a "welcome" he did NOT ask for. Teasing as a love language, or just plain mean? We argue. A lot. Two panels this week. (I couldn't get everyone in one room, and yes, I forgot to hit record the first time. Doh!) Carol and Chris share a theory that had me saying "I hadn't thought of that": did Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe) have a hand in the prank? Then Mel, Gabriela and Doug fight it out over whether Eden is a sweet, misunderstood girlfriend or a woman who brings her own cutlery to lunch, carries a switchblade, and thinks a Friday the 13th-style summer camp massacre is funny.     Best Medicine S2E1 Reaction: A Mermaid, a Blood Phobia & Is Eden Friend or Foe?

    Best Medicine Season 2 is here, and so is a new format! I'm trying to incorporate your suggestions from last year's survey, so this time Gen Z panelist Gabriela and I trade hot takes, then my Unspoiled panel (Mel, Doug, and Carol Doehler, none of whom have seen Doc Martin) takes over.  Every few episodes, I plan to have Doc Martin-spoiled Best Medicine fans giving their takes. Five months have passed in Port Wenn, and writer Liz Tuccillo wastes no time tying up the Season 1 finale's loose ends. Al Large (Carter Shimp) is headed to school in New York. Is Elaine (Cree) going with him? And why is Al still giving Bert (John DiMaggio) grief? Then there's Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe). She has redecorated the office, put Elaine in a dental-assistant coat, and is also Louisa's fertility doctor. Gabriela thinks there's nothing wrong with Eden. Doug thinks she's conniving and points to one "I need to see Louisa" moment as proof. Freudian slip, or all part of the plan? Meanwhile Peter Cronk (Ben Lewis Doherty) and poor Copernicus are being pushed aside, and Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts) says Martin (Josh Charles) has taken a few steps backward. Louisa (Abigail Spencer) is juggling IVF, two jobs, and a lot of loneliness. Watching her third-wheel on the couch with Al and Elaine hurt a little. Martin's blood phobia also goes public, and Aunt Sarah is not happy about who got told first. This episode also brings us a mermaid. Cecilia washes up in Port Wenn, and Sheriff Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra) handles her story with more heart (and more actual police work) than we've seen from him before. Is this the grown-up Mark we've been waiting for? We also get Sally Mylow (Clea Lewis) and that neck brace, the Judith (Andrea Martin), Geneva (Didi Conn), and Aunt Sarah trio (more of them, please!), and the teens (decrepit?  Puh-LEASE!). Plus the sea urchin economy at the Salty Breeze, a smoking gag that had us crying with laughter, and what increased tourism can mean for a town like Port Wenn.  Speaking of smoking, good messages: don’t smoke, if you have a mental health crisis, getting professional help is good, and phones can be addictive!     Best Medicine Season 2 Preview: A Gen Z Fan's Hot Takes on Martin, Louisa & the New Love Pentagon

    Season One of Best Medicine ended in a tangle of misunderstandings, and I’ll have a Season Two podcast guest to help sort it out: Gabriela, a Gen Z viewer who runs with a whole Discord group of fellow fans. She found the show on Hulu (blood-phobic doctor, sold), then went back and watched Doc Martin to see where it all started.  She’ll be bringing her group chat's best theories with her. We also get into whether Al (Carter Shimp) should actually take one of those college acceptances or stick around Port Wenn for Elaine (Cree). Gabriela's take, as someone closer to Al's age than I am, might surprise you. Then there's the Best family. Robert (Martin Clunes) is confirmed to be returning, we debate whether he and his wife Vanessa are actually still together given what we know about Robert's gambling and Vanessa's very "radical honesty" psychology style.     Doc Martin Season 7 Newbie Reaction: Couples Therapy, a Taser, and Patty's Big Told-You-So

    Patty has said it for seasons: Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz) keeps putting Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes) into situations he was never going to survive, then treats the wreckage as proof she was right. In Season 7, Dr. Rachel Timoney (Emily Bevan) asks whether Louisa is setting Martin up to fail on purpose, and whether that is really about avoiding intimacy. I could not WAIT for Patty to get to this season.  She’s been so on target with her comments. And I loved her reaction enough to make it the intro for the episode. Season 7 opens with Louisa in Spain for three weeks with no contact, and Martin just getting on with it until Aunt Ruth (Dame Eileen Atkins) points out how odd that is. Then comes the therapy: three hugs a day, three nice things, and an actual date at the restaurant where they first met. Also one of the great fake-out lines in the whole series. IYKYK. It involves a sweater. And the picnic!  Great to see Angela Sim (Caroline Quentin), Martin’s Men Behaving Badly better half, join in the fun. Patty's other verdicts. She really loves Aunt Ruth and PC Joe Penhale (John Marquez) has crossed from annoying to endearing, although her sentiments don’t extend to ‘competent’.  Who thought it was a good idea to arm Penhale?!  Peter Cronk (Preston Nyman) turns up aged fifteen and starts bossing Morwenna Newcross (Jessica Ransom) around, which got us ranking all three receptionists - Elaine Denham (Lucy Punch), Pauline Lamb (Katherine Parkinson), Morwenna - and me asking whether Best Medicine's Elaine Denton (Cree) is a composite of the lot. We also get into whether Martin Best (Josh Charles) changed more in one season than Martin Ellingham has in seven. Patty has had enough of Mrs. Tishell (Selina Cadell) and Danny Steel (Tristan Sturrock). Then there's the dog. Martin decides Buddy has to go, permanently, and neither of us could get past it. Patty watched it wondering how I was going to defend it. I did not.  Did this fly in the UK?  In the US, the dog can NEVER die.  It’s a rule. (Well, it should be). Plus Sigourney Weaver wanders into Portwenn as Beth Traywick (Patty wants more!), and Gemma Jones closes the season as Annie Winton in a hostage situation that becomes the sharpest mirror Martin and Louisa have had yet.     Doc Martin Season 6 Newbie Reaction: "He's Not the Only One Who Has to Change"

    Season 6 opens with the Ellingham wedding and ends with depression, disillusion, and a surgery that should never have happened. Patty came into this one off a season 5 finale she loved — and this season did not clear that bar. She's firmly on Team Martin (Martin Clunes) at this point, though she gives Louisa (Caroline Catz) points where they're earned. Aunt Ruth Ellingham (Eileen Atkins) — stalker and all — and Joe Penhale (John Marquez) have both endeared themselves to Patty, and the Al (Joe Absolom) and Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) spark has caught her interest. She's even a fan of Mike Pruddy (Felix Scott) as a childminder, OCD and all. Bert (Ian McNeice) grates on her more every episode for how often Al has to bail him out of his own scrapes. Of course we agree that Margaret Ellingham (Claire Bloom) is despicable. And Patty thinks Mrs. Tishell (Selina Cadell) came back not quite right — and downright mean to Jennifer Cardew (Annabelle Apsion). What she can't forgive: playgroup, and then sports day. Patty's read is that Louisa keeps putting Martin in situations where he's set up to fail, then treats the failure as evidence. "He wants to fix it. He's gonna need some help with how — but she has to wanna fix it too, and he's not the only one that has to change."
