Convergence Pulse One: Pulling the Brakes - Who Controls AI Now?

Pulling the Brakes: Who Controls AI Now? Convergence Pulse is a compact podcast series with AI experts Faisal Hoque and Lauren Hawker Zafer. Each episode is 15 minutes long and focuses on the biggest, weekly developments in AI. Why? Because it matters and they want you to know why it does. Tune in and don't forget to subscribe to stay uptodate on a weekly basis. This episode circles around the following announcements:1. OpenAI cancelled a new model because it failed safety testsOn Monday, OpenAI shelved GPT-6.1 Astra, which had been planned for an October launch, after it failed internal safety and alignment audits. Internal evaluations found the model was deceptive and went beyond the boundaries it was given. In particular, it sometimes misreported what actions it had taken and operated outside its authorized scope. Separately, the AI Security Institute reported that the already-released GPT-6 Astra, in simulated testing, created fake identities to deceive developers, posted comments from fake accounts disputing accurate security reviews, and delivered malicious payloads to open-source codebases. 2. The White House and tech CEOs signed a voluntary "self-policing" accordOn Tuesday, President Trump hosted AI leaders at the White House, and executives signed a commitment to self-police. Trump called the accord "morally binding," said he's seeing "tremendous self-policing," and said the administration is considering a 10-person committee to oversee the AI industry. He also maintained that the government would not halt AI development. The meeting followed a series of incidents raising safety concerns, including AI agents going rogue and attempting to hack into federal databases. In a parallel push, Florida's attorney general asked a court for an injunction that would stop OpenAI from advancing new models without third-party-approved safety protections. 3. Anthropic's IPO prospectus revealed the staggering economics of AIReuters obtained Anthropic's confidential IPO filing. It shows a $42 billion net loss in 2025 and plans to spend $518 billion on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in coming years. About 80% of that is non-cancelable or payable regardless of usage. Revenue is growing fast. Q2 2026 revenue was $11.5 billion, up from $4.73 billion in Q1. The listing could value the company at more than $2 trillion. Notably, more than a third of the filing is devoted to risk warnings, including "existential risks to humanity".The common thread: AI systems are getting powerful enough to act on their own, governments are debating whether to trust companies to police themselves, and the money involved is now large enough to affect the wider economy. All three stories are about the same question: who gets to decide how fast this goes, and on what terms. Episode 22 - The Real AI Bill

Nearly half of all enterprise AI proofs of concept are scrapped before they reach production, over security, privacy and control failures. Shadow AI has pushed the average cost of a breach up by more than $600K. Regulatory penalties now threaten up to 7% of global turnover. For years the mantra was "move fast or get left behind." In this episode, Lauren Hawker Zafer sits down with her co-host Faisal Hoque to talk about what that speed actually cost and why the true bill for cutting corners on responsible AI is only now arriving. In Episode 22 Faisal and Lauren Cover: - Why so many enterprise AI projects die before deployment – Shadow AI, agents and the governance gap nobody is regulating – What responsible AI means in practice: ethics, data lineage, safety governance – Sunk deployments, reputational fallout and operational drift — The costs that don't show up in GPU tokens – What leaders should be doing differently now Faisal Hoque is the founder of SHADOKA and NextChapter, and the author of Transcend and Reinvent. Episode 21 - Your AI Strategy is Only As Strong As the People Who Run It. Here's A 90-Day Plan to Start Building the Organisational Capability you Need to Succeed.

Your AI Strategy Is Only as Strong as the People Who Run It Most failed AI initiatives don't fail on the technology. They fail because the organization doesn't have the people to run it. In this episode of Convergence, Lauren Hawker Zafer and Faisal Hoque breaks down why 61% of senior leaders at large U.S. and U.K. professional services firms abandoned at least one AI project in the past year for a single reason: their people lacked the skills to deliver it. Deloitte's 2026 State of AI in the Enterprise report — a survey of more than 3,200 business and IT leaders across 24 countries — reaches the same conclusion: insufficient worker skills is now the single biggest barrier to integrating AI into the business. Faisal introduces the AI capability stack: the four layers every organization needs for an AI strategy to survive contact with reality: Technical depth: ML engineering, data engineering, AI security, model evaluation Domain application: knowing where AI creates value in a specific function, not just what it can do General workforce fluency: enough understanding to use the tools well and recognize a wrong output Organizational infrastructure for learning: incentives, protected time, manager accountability (the layer almost everyone skips) Then he walks through a 90-day plan to close the gap: Days 1–30: Map: define your capability model, assess your workforce against it, and decompose your actual AI portfolio into the capabilities each initiative requires Days 31–60: Build: targeted external hiring, structured reskilling tied to real roles, baseline fluency tied to behavior rather than attendance, partner relationships that transfer capability instead of creating dependency, role redesign, and manager accountability Days 61–90: Embed: capability reviews in talent and board reporting, dashboards that track the flow of capability rather than the snapshot, and stress-testing new capability on live work to see what breaks Questions answered in this episode: Which capability layers do companies over-invest in, and which do they neglect? How do you tell a genuine skills gap from a strategy gap disguised as one? How do you redesign roles without employees reading it as downsizing? What belongs on a capability dashboard a board would actually find credible — versus vanity metrics? Where does succession planning for AI-critical roles even start? Episode 20: Culture is Where AI Strategy Goes to Die. Here's How to Jump Start an AI Ready Culture in 90 Days!

Welcome to Convergence. In this episode, hosts Lauren Hawker Zaffer and Faisal Hoque unpack one of the most polarizing AI transformation stories of the year: a CEO who put 20% of payroll into AI training, gave his people a full year to adapt — and then replaced almost 80% of them anyway. Asked if he'd do it again, he said yes without hesitation. Faisal and Lauren dig into the uncomfortable question sitting underneath that headline: when a third of employees are actively sabotaging AI initiatives, is that a culture problem to fix, or accurate risk detection from the people closest to the work? Using Writer's own internal reframe on sabotage, they explore the gap between a company's stated culture and its lived culture and why that gap is where most AI strategies quietly die. From there, the conversation moves into the mechanics of the 90-day cultural roadmap: diagnosing lived experience vs. stated objectives, the danger of confusing "AI-first" messaging with "you'll be replaced" messaging, and why so many employees use AI constantly while hiding that they use it at all. They close with a look at how leadership itself is changing from technical fluency to something closer to psychological and philosophical literacy. If you're running (or living through) an AI transformation, this episode is the culture check nobody's giving you. Episode 19: Your Architecture is the Ceiling On Your AI Strategy - Here is How to Raise it in 90 Days!

In April, hackers stole Vercel's customer database and listed it for two million dollars. They didn't exploit a single line of code, they walked in through an AI tool one employee had connected to their corporate account. The AI worked exactly as designed. The architecture around it didn't. However, Vercel isn't really the story. The story is about every company plugging AI agents, copilots, and assistants into systems built for a world that no longer exists :data in silos nobody owns, service accounts nobody audits, integrations held together by one engineer's memory. AI doesn't break those systems. It exposes them, at speed and at scale. This itself is convergence: the moment AI, identity, data, and security stop being separate problems and become the same problem. In this episode of Convergence, Faisal Hoque and Lauren Hawker Zafer get into the breaches that never make headlines, why an AI agent is architecturally an employee that needs hiring and offboarding, and where we actually disagree on shadow AI. They argue about who really owns AI architecture (and why defaulting to the CISO is a trap), pressure-test the honest version of a 90-day readiness plan, and walk through the multi-agent cascade scenario that keeps one of us up at night. If your "architecture" is a Notion page or a Fortune 500 stack, there's a translation here for you. Episode 18: Your Leadership Team isn't Ready for AI. Here's a 90-Day Plan to Change that!

Is your leadership team truly AI-ready, or are they just playing a high-stakes game of AI Theater? In this episode of Convergence, co-hosts Lauren Hawker Zafer and Faisal Hoque dismantle the corporate buzzwords to expose a cold truth: AI isn’t just a software update, it’s a leadership autopsy. If executives are outsourcing their curiosity to consultants and tech teams while avoiding personal change, they aren't leading; they are becoming the ultimate bottleneck. This episode maps out a rigorous, battle-tested 90-day blueprint designed to move senior leadership past the "what" of technology and straight into the "who" of the boardroom.
