    Reading recovery recovery

A teacher tells a struggling reader to look at the picture to help them guess the word. That's not reading. That's the whole approach Emily spent this episode pulling apart. Emily traces reading recovery and balanced literacy back to their origin in 1960s New Zealand, where researcher Marie Clay watched what good readers do and built a teaching method around it, without ever checking whether those behaviours actually caused good reading. She unpacks what the follow up research actually found once those kids grew up, and why speech pathology caseloads are still full of the fallout today. What we cover: • Where reading recovery actually came from, and the flaw baked into the research from the start • Why self-correction and guessing from context are signs of a struggling reader, not a skilled one • What happens in the future to children who have completed reading recovery programs according to the research • The current reading landscape in Australian adults and how this impacts everyday life • What Emily see in clinic when a child has to unlearn years of guessing before they can actually read This isn't a matter of teaching style or preference. It's a matter of what the evidence actually shows, and what happens to the kids caught in the middle. Send your questions via Instagram DM @milestoneskth to be featured anonymously on the show.
