    Ryan explores key moments from municipal election night and catches you up on all the latest developments.  Plus, Metchosin Farm's Fiona Hammersly Chambers caught up with Ryan & Lisa for you regular garden tips.  With Halloween fast approaching, we want to be your go-to source for all things spooky in the capital region. On October 24th, ahead of catching up on CFAX 1070 provincial election night coverage, you can swing by the Sooke Region Museum for a series activities for kids and adults alike, including corn husk dolls, a costume parade and even a family-friendly West Coast Cabaret performance. The fun starts in the late afternoon with the Great Gourd Showdown. Sooke Region Museum executive director Michelle Richard joins with more.  According to the early results, View Royal political newcomer Volker Damman is your mayor-elect with just 73 more votes than runner-up David Screech. He joins to catch up with us on how the night played out.  We’ve just seen a lot of big shake ups in municipal politics, with several council elects featuring slates, some interesting developments on Victoria-Saanich amalgamation and new mayors in a handful of outlying municipalities in the capital region.     Municipal election trends, another BC Conservative candidate dropped, Orca census and Friday Food Vibes

    A new survey finds that young nurses are leaving the workforce, with 26 out of 100 below the age of 35 making their exit after starting up in 2024. Policy think-tank MEI wrote the report, and their vice-president of research Gerard Lucyshyn joins to beak down the data.  The July census for the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale out of the Washinton-based Centre for Whale Research found a two-whale increase since 2025. What’s the context on this modest growth? Here for reaction is Raincoast Cetacean Research Program biologist Janine McNeilly. A democracy expert with Vancouver Island University says some unique electoral dynamics could shape local election outcomes – the results of which we will share with you tomorrow night live as they come in. Today we’re taking a big picture look at the local races with Daniel Westlake, a senior research fellow with the Jarislowsky Chairs in Trust and Political Leadership. It’s been a busy 48 hours on the B.C. election trail, with a leaders debate followed by another BC Conservative candidate getting fired, and controversy surrounding a draft plan for limiting compensation to forest companies in land transfers to First Nations.     51st threats, debate debrief, earthquake preparedness and mental health care system priorities

    It’s the Great BC Shake out today and as we get set to do our practice run at 10:15 a.m., let’s catch up with Erin Stockill! You may know her as emergency program officer for the district of Saanich, but she’s also the Vice President of the BC Earthquake Alliance. The Victoria band known for poking fun at ferry waits in their name is also recognizing today as the great BC Shake Out, with their 2025 song about the subject: the Big One. Cam from the band is joining us to talk about why it’s important – at least in art – to have a smile in the face of natural disaster. New opinion data commissioned by the BC division of the Canadian Mental Health Association is highlighting some priorities for people heading into the provincial election, including overwhelming support for upstream supports before things reach a crisis. CAMH BC CEO Jonny Morris is joining us for more. We’ve been so focused on our double election season we almost forgot about the U.S. mid-terms, but Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra says they’re watching us closely for signs of interference in the mid-terms. This comes after U.S. president Trump made more explosive remarks yesterday at a rally, saying Canada will “end up being the 51st state.” Local retired diplomat Jeremy Kinsman has made some time for us to share his reaction.

    Looking ahead at the leaders debate, Canadian in space, mail-in ballots, seasonal vaccinations and Victoria tourism economy boom

    Mail-in ballots are at issue after the City of Victoria encouraged those still waiting for their mail-in ballots to vote in person, as the city says Canada Post delivery delays may cause them to arrive too late to count.  We have a Canadian Astronaut Josh Kutryk at the international space station right now, in a mission that will include research, experiments and critical maintenance. What are the coolest parts we need to know about? Geoff Steeves is Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UVic & Global Faculty Member at the International Space University, and he’s got the details Saanich North and the Islands is shaping up to be a lively race, with BC Green leader Emily Lowen on the ballot, along with Richard Smith for CentreBC and Ryan Windsor for the BC Conservatives. Now we’re going to meet the BC NDP candidate, Kala Bryson. It seems flu season is coming hard and fast this year and Island Health is rolling out its flu vaccinations now. Medical health officer Dr. Kevin Donak is joining us with more.   We’re getting amped up for the BC leaders debates which we will be broadcasting this evening. Here for a look back on the campaign so far, and key things to watch for in this leaders event is Vancouver Sun reporter Alec Lazenby. We’re on the heels of a great summer for the cruise industry, with the Victoria Harbour authority reporting a record high of more than one million passengers welcomed in a single season. But has this made a real difference for Victoria’s tourism economy at large? Destination Greater Victoria CEO Paul Nursey joins to share his thoughts on that, and the future of the industry in the coming colder months.

However, like any science, forensics is an evolving field with new studies calling into question older findings. New findings out of UBC points to significant limitations of sniffer dogs, bloodstain pattern analysis and ballistic evidence routinely used in courts. UBC law school associate professor Sara Gordon joins.  CFAX Santas Anonymous executive director Christine Hewitt-Goodsir joins Mornings with Ryan & Lisa for the latest update.  On the heels of a Hadestown ticket give-away, Green Party leader and local MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands joins to talk pipeline politics. With the major projects bill passing its first vote in the House of Commons, she is warning about how the proposed legislation would give wide-ranging discretion to ministers over project decisions.     Long weekend on BC Ferries, car insurance politics, impressions of party leaders and Friday Food Vibes

    The Victoria Therapeutic Riding association is getting set for a Halloween event later this month, but they tell us a minimum of 25 participants are needed to make it happen and are encouraging early registration. It’s called Trick of Trot and is running in collaboration with Ponies and Paint Nights.  A new Angus Reid poll suggests fewer than half of British Columbians have something positive to say about Premier Eby when asked in a survey on perceived strengths and weaknesses of party leaders. BC Conservative leader Doerkson is still an open question, with much of us still getting to know him. Angus Reid Institute senior research associate Jon Roe joins to break down the data.  The latest drama in B.C. politics is the BC Conservatives firing a candidate in Victoria-Beacon hill, who was also the interim president of the Victoria Conservative Association. Screenshots shared by the NDP show him saying last year that a car that drove through a pro-Palestine protest "should have reversed" over the demonstrators. Meanwhile, it’s been a busy week on the provincial campaign trail, with car insurance politics taking centre stage for much of the week. Now we’re catching up with Vancouver Sun columnist Vaughn Palmer.
