Welcome to Sensitive But Unclassified: Fallen Heroes, a podcast where each episode is the tragic story of a Federal Correctional Worker's final moments. These men (and 1 woman) gave their lives in service to their country, keeping communities safe, and I think that deserves a little more recognition. UPDATE (8/7/2026): Ok, new update (hooray!)...Ummm, I still haven't been able to finish because (drum roll...) my computer died! Literally, while I was using it, the SSD gave up the ghost. So, since I'm not made of money I need to save up either for a completely new computer OR just the part necessary to get me back into functioning status. I haven't heard or seen anything about "where have you gone," or anything so I know it isn't a HUGE issue for people, but for those 3 or 4 people who check, there's your reason. Soon, I hope.

    Today’s episode is about the life and ultimate sacrifice of 22-year-old Correctional Officer Jose V. Rivera, a Navy veteran who was tragically killed by two inmates at USP Atwater on June 20, 2008. Relying strictly on the official history preserved by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, we recount the fateful afternoon headcount that resulted in the very first staff murder in the history of the facility. Once again, although pointed out in the introduction, I will say the following: I am NOT a representative of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.     Apologies for the 2 weeks of silence! Spring break made it virtually impossible to get any real recording done around here. Anyway... We're led to believe that because it, "isn't a penitentiary," that FCI Oxford is a safer, run-of-the-mill place. Maybe it was once, but not after three inmates decided that an officer was going to die.     The sequence of events that transformed the orderly operation of then USP Marion started with the murder of Officer Clutts and ended with the death of Officer Hoffman, who was murdered in chillingly similar fashion to his coworker, murdered only hours before. Note: Apologies if you here any static anywhere in this recording. At this time, at this place, some inmates wanted out, and they were willing to kill anyone who got in their way.
