Let's talk all things love magic, attraction, desire, and the much larger world of Venusian magic. Rather than approaching love magic as simply a means of finding a partner or making someone fall in love with you, I explore the many different things that can fall under this enormous magical category, from affection, sexual desire, and reconciliation to beauty, glamour, social favor, companionship, and prosperity. We get into the importance of understanding what we actually mean when we say we want love, and how distinguishing between attraction, attention, desire, and affection can help us build much more intentional and effective workings. I dive further into Venus herself, exploring her associations with attraction, pleasure, fertility, harmony, and the art of drawing things toward us, and why reducing her to the goddess of romantic love does a disservice to the richness of her planetary and divine sphere. Historically, I explore the complicated relationship between Aphrodite and Venus, their distinct histories and cults, and the much older Near Eastern traditions associated with the planet Venus, including Inanna and Ishtar. We wander through Aphrodite’s many origin stories, her geographical associations with Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean, and the ways these traditions reveal a much more complicated picture than the familiar modern image of the love goddess. I also dive into the world of planetary magic, looking at how Venus was approached through astrological timing, material correspondences, talismanic images, and ritual construction. We get into the practical side of things, exploring how these historical principles can inform modern Venusian workings. From charms for affection and remembrance to the use of perfume, written names, cords, knots, mirrors, sympathetic figures, and personal materials, I discuss the many ways we can give a particular desire a physical form and construct circumstances around the outcome we want to encourage. We get into erotic magic, dream workings, binding, and the use of figurines and other objects to embody desire and enact a desired condition, as well as the role of prayer, offerings, and direct engagement with Venus and other divine or spiritual powers. Along the way, I consider the ethical questions that arise when attraction magic begins to move toward coercion, obsession, and attempts to interfere with another person’s will, because if Venusian magic is ultimately concerned with attraction, pleasure, and the coming together of things, then perhaps we should be asking not only what we want to draw toward us, but what kind of relationship we actually want to cultivate once it arrives.
