Bourbon & B******t!

Joe and Mike

We're diving headfirst into the biggest, most talked-about issues out there, but with a twist. Instead of just picking a side, we're all about understanding why people think what they think and why they do not agree with what WE think! In a world that feels super divided, we believe you really get it when you look at things from every angle. Shall we say both sides of the coin? Each episode, we're gonna throw a hot topic at our participants – and yeah, that may include some of our listeners! We'll challenge everyone to really put themselves out there and in someone else's shoes. We'll present the issue, and then build arguments for both sides, even if it goes against what we all personally believe. Our aim here is to get past the surface disagreements, dig into the real reasons behind opinions, and find all those subtle, dirty details that usually get lost amongst the noise, the screaming.. And of course thrown onto social media. So, come join us as we explore the tricky stuff, question what we think we know, and ultimately, figure out the "Two Sides of the Coin." all while drinking good bourbon. Will you get offended… most likely. Will you start questioning some of your own thoughts…. I hope so….

    Society's Double Standards

A deep dive into societal double standards and their implications or lack there of. As we dive into the complexities of our current political landscape, Joe and Michael tackle the pressing issue of double standards that seem to proliferate in our society today. ## The Double Standard Dilemma Joe opens the conversation by reflecting on how double standards are often invisible to those who benefit from them. He notes, "As kids, we thought we knew everything, but as we grow older, the complexities of double standards become clearer." This thought-provoking insight sets the stage for a deep discussion on how different demographics experience societal norms differently. ## Political Discrepancies Transitioning into a more politically charged territory, Joe and Michael examine the apparent leniency afforded to certain political figures. Joe challenges the audience with a poignant observation about the current president's controversial remarks: "He could kill somebody in New York City and get away with it." The conversation flows into a broader critique of how these statements would have been received if made by previous leaders, highlighting a stark contrast in public reaction. ## The Media's Role Michael adds another layer to the discussion by recalling how media coverage has shifted over time. He points out, "When Obama bowed to a Saudi prince, it was seen as disrespectful. Now, we see leaders making outrageous comments without backlash." This reflects a troubling trend, where the standards applied to different leaders shift based on public perception and media narratives. ## A Call to Awareness The episode wraps up with a call for awareness of the double standards that permeate our lives and politics. Joe urges listeners to recognize these discrepancies and understand their implications, saying, "This normalization of behavior in our leaders is dangerous, and we must remain vigilant." As we navigate these complex issues, it's essential to engage critically with the narratives and standards that shape our society. --- For a deeper exploration of these topics, listen to the full episode where Joe and Michael continue to unravel the intricacies of our political climate.

Drinking Stagg and Kids leaving the nest

Season 2 kicks off with bourbon, blunt honesty, and a question every parent has to answer. What happens when your kid becomes an adult in a world where housing is brutal, jobs are uncertain, and even a “starter home” can feel out of reach? Joe and Michael get real about the messy middle between raising a child and watching them leave the nest: when to encourage independence, when to offer support, and when staying home can make sense. Joe and Michael open Season 2 with a pour of hard-to-find Stagg bourbon and a celebration of Michael turning 50. Then the conversation turns to the pressures facing young adults today. From student loans and blue-collar career paths to the cost of groceries, rent, and utilities, they explore why becoming independent can look very different now than it did in the 1990s.In this episode, they discuss: Why “move out at 18” can be easier said than doneHow rent, groceries, utilities, and insurance affect the cost of living independentlyUsing household contributions as a way to prepare young adults for life on their ownWhy learning about compound interest early can make a major difference over timeThe balance between giving adult children room to build financial stability and setting expectationsThe pride—and uncertainty—that come with seeing your child ready to leave homeThere’s also a humorous detour into Cybertrucks, plenty of bourbon talk, and a preview of a future conversation about family roles and the mental load at home. If you’re a parent thinking about your child’s next step, a young adult figuring out how to get established, or simply interested in an honest conversation about money and family, this episode is for you.

Episode Summary: Lessons from History—Propaganda, Conflict, and Society’s Cycles

In this thought-provoking interview, we sit down with Steve, a dedicated historian and educator, to explore the chilling parallels between the mid-20th century and our modern era. From the mechanics of WWII propaganda to the polarizing effects of social media, this episode dives deep into how narrative control shapes our reality and fuels societal division. Steve shares his unique perspective through the lens of Holocaust artifacts, reminding us that the "cycle of history" is often driven by the same human psychology—regardless of the century. We discuss the dangers of dehumanization, the 100-year pattern of global conflict, and why the simple act of "loving your neighbor" is the most radical tool we have for breaking the cycle. The Propaganda Machine: How historical techniques used in WWII have evolved into modern social media algorithms. The 100-Year Cycle: Exploring the theory that societal conflict repeats in predictable patterns. Dehumanization & Tribalism: Identifying the warning signs when political and social discourse turns from disagreement to dangerous rhetoric. The Power of Empathy: Why education and civil discourse are the only defenses against the psychology of hate. "The cycle of conflict is always the same."
