S03.E03 When Gossip Arrives as a Prayer Request

This week’s episode: Gossip That Wears a Prayer Request “I’m only telling you this so you can pray.” Most of us have heard that sentence, and many of us have said it. Dr. Flood takes on the kind of gossip that has learned to sound holy, shows how to recognize it, and explains from Scripture why God takes it so seriously. In this episode: How gossip puts on ministry clothes, and the test that separates a real prayer request from news with a bow on itWhy most people who pass these stories along aren’t malicious, and why the person at the center is hurt just the sameWhat Proverbs says about a gossip who separates close friendsThe church-specific version: being “in the loop” as status, prayer meetings that turn into information exchanges, and pastors who share a family’s story without permissionWhat to do when a “prayer request” lands in your lap, including the one question that slows a gossip chain and how to be the place it stopsA word for anyone whose private pain was passed around The Mailbag: The first listener question comes from D.S. in Connecticut, whose marriage ended, children left, and dog died, all in one stretch. The Shepherd’s Toolbox (for pastors, counselors, and ministry leaders): A clinical look at Histrionic Personality Disorder, the third Cluster B disorder covered in When Sheep Bite. Dr. Flood describes the core pattern of excessive emotionality and attention-seeking, explains how it can fuel a gossip chain, why correcting the behavior alone rarely reaches the need underneath it, and why caution matters before anyone applies the label. Next time: Antisocial Personality Disorder, which closes out Cluster B. Coming next week: The Anxious Christian The Empty Chair: The holidays have a way of reopening every loss. Join Lance and Deanna Flood for a free eight-week online support group for anyone grieving a death, divorce, estrangement, or another loss that makes the season hard. S03.E02 Grief That Doesn't Get a Funeral

This week’s episode: Grief That Doesn’t Get a Funeral Every loss deserves to be grieved, including the ones nobody holds a service for. Dr. Flood talks about the grief that follows a pet, a miscarriage, an estrangement, or a loved one who is still living but out of reach, and shows from Scripture that God makes room for all of it. In this episode: What disenfranchised grief is, and why some losses never receive a funeral, a card, or a casseroleThe grief of losing a pet, and the shame that so often gets added to itMiscarriage, and the child a mother carried who no one else ever metAmbiguous loss, the grief of a parent, spouse, or adult child whose loved one is still living but out of reachThe men who lost partners during the AIDS crisis and were barred from the hospital room and the funeral, and what Romans 12:15 says to anyone mourningJesus weeping at Lazarus’s tomb, and Job’s friends in their first seven days of silenceCreating your own ritual when the world offers none, and what to say to a grieving friend The Shepherd’s Toolbox (for pastors, counselors, and ministry leaders): A clinical look at Borderline Personality Disorder, the second Cluster B disorder covered in When Sheep Bite. Dr. Flood walks through the core pattern of instability and fear of abandonment, why a safety plan belongs in place before the first session, how to tell a true crisis from routine emotional intensity, and why a licensed clinician makes your ministry stronger. He also connects the disorder to ambiguous loss for the spouses and adult children grieving a relationship in real time. Next time: Histrionic Personality Disorder. S03.E01 Grown Children of a Narcissistic Parent

The Flood Zone is back, and it's bigger. After a long hiatus, Dr. Lance Flood relaunches the show with a wider lens. The Flood Zone now speaks to individuals, families, marriages, and the communities that hold them together, still grounded in Scripture and sharpened by clinical training. There's a new topic each week, plus a new closing segment for pastors and counselors called The Shepherd's Toolbox. This week's episode: Grown Children of a Narcissistic Parent You love your mother or father. You also dread the phone call, and you can't remember the last conversation that didn't end in guilt, tears, or both. If you've spent decades being a good son or daughter and it's never been enough, this episode is for you. In this episode: What "narcissistic" actually means, and why not every difficult parent qualifiesThe patterns you've lived through but may never have had words for: DARVO, gaslighting, triangulation and "flying monkeys," love bombing and devaluation, the silent treatment, and moving goalpostsPractical tools: how to stop JADEing (Justify, Argue, Defend, Explain), grey rocking, documentation, and the full-contact, low-contact, and no-contact spectrumA word for spouses who love someone walking through thisThe question many believers carry: does "honor your father and mother" mean unlimited access? Why forgiveness and reconciliation are not the same thing The Shepherd's Toolbox (for pastors, counselors, and ministry leaders): A clinical look at Narcissistic Personality Disorder from When Sheep Bite, including the diagnostic criteria, why caution matters before applying the label, how a charming parent can recruit a pastor's sympathy, and which treatment approaches help adult children rebuild a stable sense of self. Next time: Borderline Personality Disorder. Coming next week: Disenfranchised grief. Write to us: Have a question or a topic you'd like covered? Email tfz@floodlegacy.org. S02.E10 The Affair That Never Happened

In this episode, Dr. Flood tackles one of the most misunderstood threats in marriage today, the affair that never technically happened, but still cost the marriage something real. What makes a connection cross the line when no physical boundary was ever broken? Dr. Flood defines micro-infidelity not by the behavior itself, but by the protection surrounding it, and walks through exactly how emotional energy quietly leaves a marriage long before either spouse can name what's happening. This episode is for the spouse who knows something is wrong but can't point to what it is, the one who's been drifting and doesn't know how to find their way back, and for the husband or wife who just had it confirmed. We're referring to the almost, the hidden friendship, the connection that had a layer to it, and is sitting in the kind of pain that's hard to explain to anyone who hasn't felt it. The absence of a physical component doesn't reduce what happened, and the God who restores broken things isn't finished with your marriage yet. • • • 📚 Explore Our Work We operate on the Luke 6:38 and Galatians 6:2 model which means we give freely, bear one another's burdens, and trust God to provide what's needed to continue our work.  There is never a cost for anything we do, to include all podcasts, ministries, programs, training initiatives, counseling, and more. S02.E09 Divorce, Remarriage, and the Grace That Covers Both

In this special episode, Dr. Flood speaks pastor to pastor on one of the most painful and divisive issues facing the Church today. What does Scripture actually teach about divorce and remarriage? And has the Church, in its effort to uphold God's standard for marriage, built a theological system that functionally denies the sufficiency of the gospel? Dr. Flood walks through the key passages in Matthew 19 and 1 Corinthians 7, addresses the most common errors in how this doctrine is taught, and makes the case that the blood of Jesus covers even this. This episode is for the woman who survived an abusive marriage and found love again, only to be told by church elders that her current marriage is invalid. It's for the man who remarried decades ago and still carries shame he was never meant to carry. And it's for the pastor wrestling with how to counsel broken people with both honesty and grace. God's design for marriage is clear and it matters. But so does the gospel. And the gospel is big enough for messy lives. S02.E08 Marriage After Infidelity

Recovery after infidelity is not a moment but a marathon. In this episode, Dr. Flood walks you through the five clinical stages of rebuilding after an affair, what genuine repentance actually looks like, and why most couples who try to recover fail because they skip the hard middle. You will learn the three mechanisms that rebuild trust, how to recognize real progress from performance, and what Scripture says about the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation. Whether you are the betrayed spouse wondering if you can ever trust again, the unfaithful spouse trying to prove you have changed, or a pastor walking a couple through the wreckage, this episode gives you a clinical framework and biblical foundation for one of the hardest roads a marriage can walk. Restoration is possible, but it often costs more than most people expect and takes longer than anyone wants. S02.E07 Spiritual Manipulation in Marriage

Spiritual manipulation is one of the most insidious forms of abuse in Christian marriage because it uses God, Scripture, and spiritual authority as weapons to control, shame, or silence a spouse. The person doing it often believes they're being godly, the person experiencing it often believes they're being sinful for questioning it, and the church often enables it by misunderstanding biblical authority. In this episode, Dr. Flood teaches you how to recognize spiritual manipulation in practice, from the misuse of biblical headship to the weaponization of Scripture, "God told me" manipulation, spiritual gaslighting, and the misuse of church authority. You'll learn the clinical framework for understanding this as coercive control, what makes people vulnerable to it, and how to respond when you recognize it in your marriage or ministry. Plus, practical guidance in the Floodlight segments including hope for those experiencing manipulation, clinical pearls for pastors on how to address it without reinforcing the abuse, and this week's challenge to examine whether Scripture is being used in your marriage to facilitate unity or enforce compliance. God is the author of freedom, not control, and it's time the church stopped staying silent about spiritual manipulation. S02.E06 Trauma Bonding vs. True Intimacy

In this episode, Dr. Flood explores trauma bonding in marriage and how couples often mistake intensity for true intimacy. It it, he breaks down the neuroscience behind unhealthy attachment patterns, showing why chaos can feel like connection and how intermittent reinforcement keeps people trapped in destructive cycles. You'll learn the clinical differences between trauma bonds and genuine intimacy, discover early warning signs to watch for, and understand what makes certain people more vulnerable to these patterns. The episode includes biblical perspectives on covenant marriage, practical guidance for recognizing if you're in a trauma bond, and actionable steps for building the kind of safety and trust that real intimacy requires. Plus, a special segment for pastors on identifying and helping couples break free from these destructive patterns. If your relationship feels like a roller coaster of highs and lows, this episode will help you understand what's really happening and how to move toward something healthier.
