The Son of Man: The Authority to Give Life and Judge the World | John 5:25–30

In John 5:25–30, Jesus reveals His divine authority as the Son of Man, the giver of eternal life and the judge of all humanity. The Father has life in Himself and has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and He has given the Son authority to execute judgment. Jesus calls His hearers to recognize who He is and to understand the eternal significance of His words. Continuing His response to the Jewish leaders after healing a man on the Sabbath, Jesus explains that His work is inseparable from the work of the Father. The Son shares the Father's authority and possesses life in Himself, not merely as a temporary privilege, but as part of His very nature. What does Jesus mean when He calls Himself the Son of Man? Looking to Daniel 7, this sermon explores the vision of the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man who receives an everlasting kingdom, dominion, and authority over all peoples. This promised ruler is the Messiah, whose kingdom will never be destroyed and whose authority extends to the final judgment. The sermon also traces this theme of the Messiah's eternal rule through 2 Samuel 7, Psalm 2, Genesis 49, and Isaiah 9, showing the biblical expectation of a King whose dominion and judgment will endure forever. Jesus then describes a coming day when all who are in their tombs will hear His voice and rise—some to the resurrection of life and others to the resurrection of condemnation. This judgment is not a system in which people earn salvation by accumulating enough good deeds. Rather, their deeds reveal whether they have believed in Christ and received the life that God produces in them. Those who trust in Jesus already possess eternal life and have passed from death into life. Finally, Jesus assures His hearers that His judgment is just because He does not act independently of the Father. He judges according to the Father's will, sharing the same divine purpose and authority. Jesus Gives Eternal Life and Holds All Judgment | John 5:22–24

In John 5:22–24, Jesus declares His divine authority to give eternal life, judge all humanity, and reveal the Father. Because the Father and the Son share the same divine nature, honoring the Son is honoring the Father. Those who hear Christ’s word and believe in the Father who sent Him already possess eternal life and have passed from death into life. Continuing through Jesus’ discourse in John 5, Pastor Jeff Sulman examines the significance of Christ’s claims and what they mean for our understanding of who Jesus is and how we must respond to Him. Jesus has the authority to give life. Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, the Son also gives life to whomever He wills. This authority is demonstrated in Jesus’ miracles and extends to His promise to give eternal life to those who believe in Him. Jesus also holds the authority to judge all humanity. The Father has entrusted all judgment to the Son so that everyone will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Jesus is not merely a messenger who speaks about God; He is the divine Son whose words and works reveal the Father Himself. This passage also makes clear that there is no neutral ground when it comes to Jesus. To hear His word means more than simply understanding what He says. It involves believing and obeying Him. To reject the Son is to dishonor the Father, but those who believe have the assurance of eternal life now—not merely the possibility of receiving it at some future judgment. Salvation is not earned through religious rituals or human works. Eternal life is given by Christ to those who believe in Him. The One who has the authority to give life promises that those who believe have already passed from death into life. The Son Does What the Father Does | John 5:18–23

In John 5:18–23, Jesus continues His response to the Jewish leaders after healing the lame man on the Sabbath. He explains the unity between the Father and the Son, declaring that whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. Jesus reveals that He shares the Father’s power, authority, purpose, and work—including giving life to the dead and exercising judgment. The sermon follows three of Jesus’ explanations for these remarkable claims. First, the Son’s works are in perfect agreement with the Father’s works. Jesus is not merely a prophet receiving commands from God; He does the works of the Father with the Father’s own power and authority. Second, the Father shows the Son all that He does. The relationship between the Father and Son is one of complete intimacy and shared work, unlike the limited revelation given to the prophets. Third, Jesus gives examples of the works He shares with the Father: giving life and judging. His authority to raise the dead is uniquely divine, and His authority to judge is connected to His power to raise all people from the dead and bring them before Him. The passage presents an unmistakable claim about the deity, authority, and power of Jesus Christ—and points forward to the resurrection and judgment to come. 0:00 — John 5:18–23: Jesus’ Claim to Equality with God 7:56 — The Father and Son’s Work in Perfect Agreement 15:49 — The Father Shows the Son All Things 19:25 — The Son Gives Life to the Dead 26:14 — The Son Has Authority to Judge 31:09 — Closing Prayer and Hope of Resurrection Heritage Baptist Church Website: https://hbcjosephine.org/ Email: [hello@hbcjosephine.org](mailto:hello@hbcjosephine.org) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582595307164 #HeritageBaptistChurch #John5 #JesusChrist #DeityOfChrist #Resurrection #Judgment #GospelOfJohn #BiblicalPreaching

Jesus, the Son Who Works with the Father | John 5:16–18

In John 5:16–18, Jesus' healing of a lame man on the Sabbath leads to a confrontation with the Jewish leaders. When Jesus says, “My Father is working until now, and I myself am working,” they understand His words as a claim to equality with God. This sermon examines the Jewish understanding of the Sabbath, including the question of how God could continue working on the Sabbath while commanding His people to rest. Through the rabbinic concept of the eruv and a historic discussion about God's work on the Sabbath, we see the background that helps explain the Jews' response to Jesus. The sermon then considers what Jesus means by calling God “My Father” and claiming to do the work of the Father. Jesus is presented as the Son who shares the Father's authority over the universe—the Creator, sustainer, governor, and ruler of all things. The sermon concludes by considering how a passage like this calls us not merely to practical application, but to worship and doxology: Jesus Christ is our Savior and the Creator and ruler of the universe. 00:00 John 5:16–18 and the Controversy 03:30 Understanding the Sabbath 08:00 Did God Keep the Sabbath? 11:30 Rabbi Akiva and the Eruv 18:00 Jesus and the Father's Work 23:30 “My Father” and Equality with God 28:00 Jesus, the Heir of All Things 31:30 From Doctrine to Doxology 34:00 John 1:1–5 and the Corporate Amen Website: https://hbcjosephine.org/ Email: [hello@hbcjosephine.org](mailto:hello@hbcjosephine.org) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582595307164 #John5 #JesusChrist #Sabbath #DeityOfChrist #ExpositoryPreaching #BiblicalPreaching #GospelOfJohn

    So Close | John 5:1-16

In John 5:1–18, Jesus encounters a man who has been helpless and sick for thirty-eight years. Unable to heal himself or even make his way into the pool, the man receives healing through the direct command of Jesus: “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” This miracle displays the initiative and power of divine grace. Yet the response of the Jewish leaders shifts the focus away from the grace of the healing and toward their strict Sabbath regulations. The sermon examines the contrast between law and grace, showing how the discussion of the miracle leaves out the command that displayed grace: “Get up.” The sermon also considers Jesus’ warning to the healed man to “sin no more,” emphasizing the seriousness of sin and the judgment that is far worse than physical suffering. The man is confronted with the light of Christ, yet his response stands in contrast to others in John’s Gospel who responded to Jesus with faith. The passage ultimately calls us to consider how close we may come to the gospel without believing, and whether we will come into the light, believe in Jesus, and follow Him. Pick Up Your Pallet and Walk | John 5:1-10

As John’s Gospel moves from the signs of Cana into a new section centered around the festivals of the Jews, Jesus performs another remarkable sign: He heals a man who had been unable to walk for thirty-eight years. Before examining the teaching that follows this miracle, this sermon considers the setting and details of the healing at the pool of Bethesda. Jesus simply commands the man, “Get up, pick up your pallet, and walk,” and immediately the man is restored. But instead of rejoicing over this extraordinary act of healing, the Jewish leaders focus on the man carrying his pallet on the Sabbath. Their response reveals a growing hardness toward Jesus and His work. The sermon examines the contrast between the joy of those who receive Christ and the hardness of those who reject Him. It also considers the danger of allowing religious convictions, politics, personal judgments, or other concerns to replace love, mercy, compassion, and a proper view of people as those made in the image of God. The miracle points forward to the larger pattern in John 5–12: Jesus performs signs that reveal His glory, and those signs lead into teaching that reveals who He is and His relationship with the Father.
