    Why I Won't Sign a Comfort Letter

A client asks you to fill out a one page government form. Name, address, how much rent they pay. It only takes two minutes, but I won't do it. Yehuda Tenenbaum  and I got into this while recording an episode about tax tech, and it went far enough off track that it became its own video. He's an EA. I'm a CPA. Our rules aren't the same. What we get into: Why signing off on a client's numbers is an attest service, whether you meant it that way or notComfort letters, and what mortgage brokers actually need from youThe AICPA's template letter and what it really saysCompilations vs bookkeeping vs financial statement prepWhy your clients almost certainly don't need an audit or a reviewWhat happens to an unlicensed preparer who signs one of these and what happens to a CPA This is two people talking, not advice for your situation. Your state board, your license, and your liability are yours. Check with someone qualified before you sign anything. I Was Making More Than the People I Was Watching

A couple of guys I'd been watching shared their numbers. I was making more than both of them, and I'd started my firm before they did. Plus, I have some great processes that are unique. That's when I decided I could start talking about how I run my firm. That's the whole reason this channel exists, and it's the thing I want you to take from this episode: the people you're watching are not as far ahead of you as you think, including me. They're just posting about what they're doing. Yehuda Tenenbaum, EA came to Orlando to talk about simplifying your firm before tax season. We got into the minimum tech you need to start, why I built my own TaxDome pipeline instead of buying one, and the Claude projects I use for review, reasonable comp, and tax strategy. I also explain why I (sometimes) stop watching Jason Staats videos. We love Jason. Watch the segment before you send me an angry message. What we cover: Why you feel behind, and why that's a stress problem instead of a tech problemThe minimum stack to start a firm, and what you can skipUnderstanding pipelines before you buy someone else'sWhether every service needs its own pipelineThe Google doc I keep all tax season and work through every AugustUsing AI in a way where you still own the outputBuild it yourself or pay someone to keep it updated Join the community for tax firm owners here:https://www.acceleratorcommunity.com/join-nowSignup for my newsletter:https://www.wootencpa.com/newslettersFind me on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/brad-wooten-cpa/ ****************************** *Disclaimer: This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not financial, tax, or legal advice. We Tested AI in Our Tax Firms: Here's What Works & What Doesn't

Yehuda Tenenbaum, EA and I sat down with no script and one topic: AI and taxes. What came out is an honest look at what these tools do for a tax firm today, and what's still just hype. We break down where AI is genuinely delivering value in tax and accounting, where it's falling short, and what firm owners actually need to know before investing time or money into these tools. In this episode, we cover:Why AI summarization is "overrated" and what to demand insteadThe real use case that could replace your tax software entirelyDIY builds (like custom Claude tools) vs. productized solutions - which makes more sense for your firm? The "token shortage" concept and why it matters for the future of AI pricingHonest takes on tools like Claude, Juno, TaxDome's Atlas, and PingWhy the "you'll be left behind" fear-mongering around AI is often overblownWhat success actually looks like for a tax firm owner and why it's more than just tech adoption Whether you're an early AI adopter or still figuring out where to start, this conversation gives you a grounded, practitioner-level perspective on what's real, what's not, and where to focus your attention.
