    When Camels Served Uncle Sam

In The 1850s, The United States Army Faced The Enormous Challenge Of Transporting Men And Supplies Across The Hot, Dry And Largely Undeveloped American Southwest. Congress Appropriated $30,000 In 1855 For An Unusual Experiment: Importing Camels For Military Service. The Experiment Proved Surprisingly Successful. Camels Could Carry Heavy Loads, Travel Long Distances With Limited Water And Negotiate Difficult Southwestern Terrain. In 1857, Edward Fitzgerald Beale Took Twenty-Five Camels On His Expedition Surveying A Wagon Road Through Portions Of Present-Day New Mexico, Arizona And California. The Civil War Effectively Ended The Experiment Before Camels Could Become A Permanent Part Of The United States Army. The Remaining Government Camels Were Eventually Sold, Although Some Continued Appearing Throughout The Southwest. The Story Later Became Intertwined With Arizona’s Legend Of The “Red Ghost,” A Mysterious Camel Reportedly Seen During The 1880s. The Larger American Consideration Is That The Camel Experiment Was Not Abandoned Because The Animals Failed. Camels Demonstrated That They Could Perform The Work Expected Of Them. War, Railroads And A Rapidly Changing West Overtook The Experiment. It Remains An Unusual Example Of American Ingenuity And The Willingness To Try An Unconventional Solution. 2/33 This is a public episode.
