    Denver Summit FC Lost Every Stat and Beat Utah Anyway

    Denver Summit FC beat the Utah Royals 2-1 on Saturday night, and every number from that match says they shouldn't have. Utah out-shot them 18 to 12 and doubled them on expected goals. Then put three of those eighteen shots on target. Three.     Seventeen Shots, Zero Chances: Denver Summit FC's Real Problem

    Denver Summit FC have spent this whole season creating chances and not finishing them — and after Wednesday's 0-2 loss to the North Carolina Courage, that story doesn't hold up anymore. Denver took seventeen shots at Centennial Stadium and created zero big chances. Twenty-eight touches inside the Courage box, six corners, and not one clear look at goal. Tash Flint took seven of those seventeen shots by herself. Kate Hanson went back through the last five matches and found the collapse underneath it: six big chances created, then five, then five, then two, then none. There's a second number in there too — Denver hasn't scored a goal from open play since the eighteenth of July, three matches and twenty days ago. Nick Cushing addresses it directly from Wednesday's press conference, including his answer on why the margins keep going against his team, and Kate explains where she thinks that argument runs out.     Denver Summit FC's leading goal scorer this season is a center back — and after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Boston Legacy, that's not a fun trivia answer anymore, it's the whole problem. Denver had thirty-eight touches inside Boston's box and nine shots. One goal came out of it, a Janine Sonis penalty. That's how Denver Summit beat the Portland Thorns 2-1 — and it wasn't even the biggest story on the field.     Denver Summit Host Portland Thorns: The Table Says Portland. The Numbers Say Otherwise.

    Portland is 3rd in the NWSL. Denver is 11th. Eleven points apart. I ran the numbers anyway, and Portland's expected-goal difference is actually worse than Denver's — the third-place team is being outplayed by the underlying process of the eleventh-place team. I built two match models this week, and they don't agree on who wins Saturday.     Summit Draw Houston Dash as Cheap Goals Cost Denver Again

    Yazmeen Ryan scored her third goal of the season Sunday — a rocket into the top corner against the team that gave her the Golden Boot a year ago. Denver Summit FC acquired Ryan from the Houston Dash in March, and her homecoming goal put the Summit ahead in the 14th minute of a match they'd go on to dominate statistically: 26 shots, 10 on target, both new club records, and a 2.86-to-1.70 edge in expected goals. They still walked away with a 2-2 draw.     Lindsey Heaps is in the building, and this episode is about what that actually means. One hundred seventy-six caps for the United States. Forty international goals.
