Why is your aquarium water cloudy? White, green, brown, and hazy aquarium water can have very different causes—and figuring out what you’re actually looking at is the first step toward deciding whether you need to do anything about it. Cloudy aquarium water is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A milky bacterial bloom can look similar to suspended substrate dust or thousands of tiny microbubbles. Green water is usually a completely different issue involving free-floating algae, while brown or tea-colored water may simply be tannins released by driftwood, leaves, botanicals, or other materials in the aquarium. Sometimes the most important clue is the color. Other times, it’s when the cloudiness appeared and what happened immediately beforehand. Did you just set up the aquarium? Add sand or aquasoil? Disturb the substrate? Perform a water change? Clean or replace filter media? Add driftwood? Change the lighting? UV can be extremely useful for certain types of green water but won’t remove tannin coloration. Activated carbon may help remove tannins but isn’t a universal solution for suspended substrate dust. Fine mechanical filtration can capture particles, but it can’t fix every biological or chemical reason water may look different.
