    Cracking the Code: Assoc Prof. Hayley Stannard on Treating Mange using Moxidectin

    Send us Fan Mail We chat with Associate Professor Hayley Stannard, lead author of three published pharmacokinetic studies on moxidectin in bare-nosed wombats, to unpack what the research shows.     We discuss why the effective 100 mL doses — are needed, and the biology behind it: wombats' unusually thick skin, how much moxidectin actually penetrates through the skin and what does this mean for the mange mites.    We also talk through the blood value results and what they reveal about stress in captured wombats, and what all of this means for carers and conservation programs treating mange in the field.  Dr Hayley Stannard is an Associate Professor in Animal Anatomy and Physiology based at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga. Her research work as a comparative physiologist has advanced understanding of disease management, health and nutritional ecology of marsupials. Most recently Hayley has been working on sarcoptic mange in wombats investigating disease dynamics and treatment strategies to help cure this deadly disease. Hayley completed her PhD on optimising nutrition and health in carnivorous (dasyurid) marsupials, and subsequently undertook postdoctoral research in a similar field, working with Tasmanian devils. At Charles Sturt University she teaches into anatomy and physiology subjects within the animal and veterinary science degrees. Her expertise supports both undergraduate and postgraduate training, helping to prepare future professionals in veterinary and animal-related fields, while also promoting knowledge of Australian native wildlife.
