Let’s Unpack That

Kris Viljoen

Hey, I’m Kris — an American living in South Africa who loves talking about the real stuff of faith and life. I’ve spent my adult life in ministry, walking with people as they wrestle with what they believe and how that belief shapes the way they live. Let’s Unpack That is a space for women — whether you’re curious about truth, faith, what’s real and trustworthy; or have known Jesus for years — to pause, reflect, and engage with truth that changes everything. It’s honest, raw, hope-filled, and I’m excited to go there with you. Bring your questions and curiosity and let’s unpack it together.

What is prayer? Is there a certain way I should pray?

Prayer is one of the most familiar practices in the Christian life—and yet, for many of us, it’s also one of the most confusing. We pray… but sometimes we’re not sure what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, or whether we’re doing it “right.” In this episode, we slow down and let Scripture define prayer for us. Prayer, at its core, is not a formula or a performance. It is an invitation—to draw near to God, to hear from Him, and to speak honestly before Him. Prayer is relational before it is functional. We’ll look to the Word as our primary reference point, especially the Psalms, where we see real people bringing their full humanity before a real God—joy, fear, doubt, repentance, praise, and longing. The Psalms remind us that God welcomes honesty far more than polish. We’ll also explore helpful biblical models of prayer—not as rigid structures, but as gentle guides. One model many believers have found helpful is ADORATION, CONFESSION, THANKSGIVING, and SUPPLICATION—a framework that shapes our hearts as much as our words. And ultimately, we’ll look to the model Jesus Himself gives us in Matthew’s eyewitness account of the Lord’s Prayer. Not a script to recite mindlessly, but a pattern that forms us: adoration of the Father, acknowledgment of His will and kingdom, and humble petition for our daily needs. So—is there a certain way you should pray? Yes… and no. There is a way shaped by Scripture, but it begins with honesty, dependence, and trust. Prayer is not about getting the words right—it’s about coming to God as we are, and being drawn closer to who He is.
